Remington HC4300 QuickCut Pro Review – Quick and Ergonomically Friendly
It was quite some time ago I reviewed the Remington HC4250, and I gave a lot of positive feedback for that palm-held hair clipping device and still rate it highly today.
The Remington HC4300 Pro is an upgraded version of the Remington HC4250 QuickCut (aka ShortCut) that I must admit I was looking forward to testing, using, and reviewing. I’ve done a heck of a lot of trimming with the HC4250, so an upgrade or renewal wouldn’t go a miss.
A peculiar thing about the Remington HC4300 is an American company produces it, but at the moment, it seems to be only on sale in the UK, Europe, and Australia and not in the USA. However, this might change very soon and it may become available in the US.
An interesting thing about the USA Remington website is it names the HC4250 the Remington ShortCut Pro, and in Australia and some European countries, Remington calls the HC4500 the Rapid Cut Turbo HC4300AU.
To reduce any confusion, this review is about the Remington HC4500 or HC4500AU which is the Pro version.
The Brand – Remington has been a well-known personal care products household brand for many years, worldwide. They started out in New York in 1937 when they introduced their first electric shaver; the rest is history. Remington remains one of the leading brands in shavers, trimmers, and hair care products today.
Within this Remington HC4500 review we will take a close look at the all-important features, explain the results after testing and using the clippers, provide an idea of what other sources have to say, and finally recommend who these palm-held clippers would be best suited for.
Let’s crack on with the all-important features!
Description & Features
Unboxed, the Remington HC4500 comes with hair clippers, 12 combs, leather travel bag, bottle of oil, cleaning brush, charging cord with plug, and an instruction manual.
The first thing to mention about these clippers is they are designed for self-cutting (DIY), and the design is palm-held. There are not that many palm-held type hair clippers on the market as yet, unlike the number of standard hair clippers available.
- Handle/Body – The whole unit ‘that’s much bigger than standard hair clippers’ is the body that is held at the sides by a user while trimming hair.
- Blades – The stainless steel blades are much wider than the blades on standard hair clippers and curve. These blades can be released and taken off for cleaning if needed.
- Combs – The HC4300 comes with 12 detachable combs for hair cutting at various lengths (1.5 – 25mm). Each comb has the size marked in inches and millimeters and grades (grade 0 – 8). These combs are easily clipped on and off the hair clipper.
- Cordless/Corded – These clippers may be used with their cord or cordless. Not to be used corded near water for obvious safety reasons.
- Charging and Battery – The charge time from empty is around 4 hours which gives a user up to 70 minutes runtime. When it’s charging, the LED blinks and stops blinking once fully charged. Users may get a quick use charge when charging the clippers for five minutes when the battery dies unexpectedly.
- Washable – The Remington HC4300 can be cleaned using the cleaning brush provided, and there is a cleaning port that a user may run water through to clean it thoroughly.
- Turbo Setting – This pro model has been given a turbo setting. Users may use the standard power setting or switch on the turbo setting for faster-cutting speed.
- Warranty – Buyers are offered a 100-day money back guarantee with Remington if they register the shaver online. If you register your product online within 28 days you’ll also get an extra one years guarantee on top of the three years (4 years total).
Turbo Setting
The turbo setting is a new feature on the HC4500 compared to the previous model. It’s activated via the switch on the back of the clippers, which offers the standard speed setting and turbo setting.
This switch was placed on the top (minus the turbo setting) on the HC4250 model, which was a better position, in my opinion. Nevertheless, the extra speed is very noticeable when using the clippers and can be noticed first by the louder sound the clippers make.
Remington states the turbo feature is there to use when a person has thicker hair or longer growth. However, I’m not sold on this feature and think it is more of a marketing ploy. The reason is that if hair clippers or trimmers can go at the highest speed, then most of us will always use that speed and not a lower speed anyway. However, it’s positive that the clippers are faster than the previous Remington.
Clipper Combs
The first thing noticeable about the clipper combs that come with the HC4300 is they are massive compared to standard clipper combs. But, of course, this is to be expected to fit the extra wide blades.
We are not short of any comb lengths Remington provides with the HC4300. They have you covered from 1.5 (0.059)- 25mm (1 in) and have all clipper guard sizes you’ll find at the barbers from 0 – 8.
Without a clipper comb, we get a 0.5 mm buzz cut!
The clipper combs are very easy to attach and detach.
These clipper combs and hair clippers can be stored away in the leather travel bag that comes in the box. It’s a decent-quality bag that I like.
How well does the Remington HC4300 Perform?
I had used the previous Remington HC4250 for over a year and had a good idea of what to expect from the model reviewed here. This model’s use and testing was mainly about finding any extra benefits or disadvantages over the last model.
Because I am a balding guy I only used the HC4300 for having an all-over buzz cut without a clipper comb on my head. Like the previous model I also used it as a body trimmer
The Trim/Cut
The HC4300 is a great piece of kit for getting a quick all-over buzz cut, one-size all-over trim. If like myself you trim right down to the scalp without a clipper comb, then you’ll find this the best hair clipper you have used in terms of ease of use and speed. The large curved blades and ergonomics make this so!
The large blade covers a lot of hair area in one swoop. The neckline when shaving from the bottom of the neck upwards is so easy to do with the large blade and the palm-held design.
It’s much quicker using the Remington Pro than any other clippers I have used thus far.
I have used the combs for body grooming, and I find it hard to see that anyone can find it easy to cut their hair at various lengths and with fades. The combs are just too cumbersome, and too much area is being covered with the large blade to be able to trim in a more detailed manner required. Someone may be able to do a great job with different lengths, but I have to say other standard hair clippers are better suited for this task.
Body Grooming
I know the QuickCut HC4300 is primarily a hair clipper; however, it can also bodygroom well.
Without a clipper comb, the HC4300 can trim armpits, chest hair, and pubic hair.
I did try manscaping with combs, and while they do the job of trimming to a specific size, they are a bit big. Also, while trimming my chest they did dig into my skin.
I trim my armpits every couple of weeks or so to prevent dreadlocks from appearing and showing through my t-shirt sleeve, and the QuickCut trims them down perfectly with a comb attachment. Unfortunately, the comb attachments are too big, but a smaller comb could be used if combless is too short.
The Remington HC4300 will do a great job of trimming any bodily hair, especially without a clipper comb. Just be cautious if you are shaving the precious crown jewels, and keep the blades a short distance from the skin as they can pinch the skin.
Build quality and Ergonomics
The QuickCut (Rapid Cut Turbo) is a good solid appliance that’s a palm-held device. Standard clippers have a handle, whereas this clipper is kind of rounded and fits easily into the hand.
The sides and the top of these clippers are rubberized. This provides ample grip.
Ease of Use
Everything is achieved easily, from attaching a comb, trimming, cleaning, charging, and everything else.
The only negative I see is for those that wish to do more with the larger clipper combs and/or trim at various lengths. The combs are just a bit too bulky for more intricate work.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning and maintenance are not a chore with the HC4300.
The clippers are waterproof and a small slat at the back of the unit is available to run water from the tap through. However, I do find it peculiar that the power attachment section is right next to the gap for cleaning.
A user may also keep the clippers switched on and run water from the tap over the front of the blades. You might want to put a spot of antibacterial hand soap on the blades with water to assist with extra cleansing.
To clean the blades more thoroughly, they can be taken off quite easily.
After each use or every other use, you might want to add a little cutter oil to the blades. While the clippers are switched on, a couple of drops will do, and then wipe off the excess oil. Oiling does take care of the blades and helps them to cut better.
Charging and Battery Life
To fully charge does take up to 4 hours on charge, and Remington states this offers 70 minutes of runtime.
When using them at least twice a month, I would get more than a month of use from the previous Remington clippers I have (fully charged battery). In addition, this Pro version offers more runtime than the older version.
The only additional thing missing that would help is an indicator light that could let us know the battery is low on charge.
The clippers can also be used with the cord attached if necessary which is a bonus when the battery starts losing its ability to hold its charge or a user has not charged the battery.
Value for Money
The Remington QuickCut Pro is priced at around £59.99 GBP, €68.00 EU, and $99 AUD. Currently, I do not have a price for the USA and will update this when it is available.
My view of the price tag is it is very well priced. It’s not the cheapest set of hair clippers, but they are worth the money.
Any Common Consumer Issues, Complaints, or Positive Reports?
A common thread among reviewers is how comfortable the Remington QuickCut is to hold and how easily it trims hair at the back of the head.
Another common report is how fast the clippers cut because of the large blades.
Surprisingly, a few reviewers mention that the HC4300 is an easy hair clipper to use for blending different hair lengths. I guess these guys know how to self-cut very well!
The only negative I picked up that I agree with is the new positioning of the power button at the back of the unit. It’s not a deal breaker, but the previously situated button on the top was more convenient.
Final Thoughts – Who is the Remington HC3400 QuickCut Pro best suited for?
The Remington HC3400 and the older HC4250 are the best self-cut DIY hair clippers I have used so far. The whole design thing of the larger blades and palm-held body just work so well compared to standard hair clippers.
Just about anyone that self-cuts their hair can try these out. And anyone who is follically challenged like myself or likes to have a one-size all over buzz cut cannot go wrong with trying them out.
Additionally, if you have some manscaping jobs to do as well, then these Remington clippers make a decent bodygroomer tool.
I did mention two things when I reviewed the HC4250 that I would like to see which remain the same wish with this model. The first thing was higher quality and sharper blades on these clippers even if they cost more, and the second is most clippers have an adjustment when a comb is not attached.
