Are you a person looking to trim or cut your hair without the aid of another person, and on top of that –have a tool that holds well in the hand? Well, you’ve come to the right place.

Okay, forget that first part of the usual dribble you find on the net.

Let’s get on with it.

You’ll get a roundup of Palm Held DIY Hair Clippers that I have tested and used over time.

There are not many decent palm-held types of clippers on the market, which limits the options, but I guess it keeps it pretty simple to choose one.

Keep in mind I mostly only trim down with an all-over buzz cut, so I can’t vouch for fading and tapering at various lengths. However, I can give you an idea based on a buzz cut, the features of each model, and my first-hand opinions on their quality.

1. Remington ShortCut Pro (aka QuickCut UK/EU) – The Overall Best

The Remington ShortCut Pro –named Remington QuickCut in the UK and Europe takes the first spot and I have not found better as yet since reviewing it in 2021.

That long blade width looks odd at first–but trust me, it totally works.

ShortCut Pro (QuickCut) Description & Features

The Remington fits well in the hand, and the front hexagon-shaped rubberized section supports these ideal ergonomics. The long blade is the star of the show on this trimmer as it covers trimming/cutting larger areas of the head.

It comes with 9 clipper combs from 1.5 mm to 15 mm (1/16 – 5/8 inches), which are easy to attach and detach. These are all marked up in mm and inches (metric and imperial). It can be used cord or cordless, so if the battery dies, the hair clipper can still be used.

The ShortCut Pro does not offer blade adjustment, like most standard hair clippers. Instead, you are limited to the level at which the blades are set, which is approximately 0.5 mm (without a comb). It’s waterproof and can be washed easily under the tap after using a brush to get rid of most of the cutting debris first.

You’ll get around 40 minutes of runtime from a full 4-hour charge. I get many uses out of one full charge and too many to count–and no battery issues for over 3 years (that’s worth noting).

ShortCut Pro Performance

The Shortcut Pro and the newer model –QuickCut Pro (only available in the UK and Europe), are my go-to trimmers—even after testing and using many higher-quality hair clippers. The main reason the Shortcut is my go-to is that it is so quick to use, and that’s because of that long blade area.

I have only used it for a buzz cut all over one length cut, and because I am balding, I use it without a comb attached. I tried it with a comb, and it worked very well when trimming all over at one length.

This has also become my go-to body trimmer. While that may seem odd, as I have tested and used dedicated body trimmers and groomers, it’s not, and the reason again is the long blade area. When trimming a large area on the head, chest, or legs, this machine clears it faster than any other.

The only downside of the large blade area is it makes the ShortCut Pro not the ideal tool for detail trimming.

Shortcut — Wrapping It Up and Costs

Since 2021, the Remington Shortcut Pro has been the winner on my list of self-cutting hair clippers and even a body trimmer, and it remains here for its wide blade area, ease of use, and ideal ergonomics.

For those needing to get into more detail trimming, fading, and cutting at various lengths during the same hair-cutting session, I am not sure this hair clipper would be best suited, and a good standard set of hair clippers might work better, despite not having the handheld ergonomics.

It’s very good value for money, priced at around $59.99 USD (£40.00 GBP—49,99 € EU, $59.99 CAD).

2. Remington QuickCut Pro (UK/EU, not USA)

The Remington QuickCut Pro is an upgrade of the QuicCut (ShortCut Pro — USA) and unfortunately Remington has not made it available in the USA.

For those outside of the USA, such as the UK, EU, AU, and maybe other countries, the QuickCut Pro is available.

QuickCut Pro Description & Features

The QuickCut Pro is very similar to the QuickCut model in terms of most of its design, wide-width blade, and how the clipper combs are attached.

The Pro model comes with 12 clipper combs (3 more than the QuickCut). The sizes included are 1.5 – 25mm, which means a user can get an extra 3 sizes when buying this model.

The additional change on the Pro model is the turbo function, which allows users to change two power modes. However, if you are like me, then you’ll just keep it on the turbo—the quickest mode—and this turbo mode does provide more power than the previous QuickCut model.

The QuickCut Pro offers 70 minutes of runtime after fully charging for 40 minutes, which is an additional 30 minutes compared to the QuickCut (I believe the QuickCut non-Pro provides more than 40 minutes).

The grip area on the Pro version has changed. It looks somewhat better than the QuickCut and feels comfortable.

QuickCut Pro Performance

Just like the QuickCut (ShortCut Pro), I get a very good all-over buzz cut in no time at all and also use it for body grooming. The wide blades make trimming large areas very quickly.

I have used a couple of the clipper combs to test out various levels of cutting but mostly use it on my head without a comb. If I needed to do any fading or cut various hair lengths during the same haircut, then I would need a better, slimmer blade head, but in reality, I would go to the barbers.

QuickCut Pro — Wrapping It Up and Costs

If you are from outside the USA and like the look of the QuickCut (ShortCut Pro) and QuickCut Pro, I would go for this version. The additional power and runtime, alongside the better grip appearance, made it a better choice for me.

The Remington QuickCut Pro is priced at around £59.99 GBP, €68.00 EU, and $99 AUD.

3. Skull Shaver Beast Clipper — Good Effort With A Big But!

The Skull Shaver Beast is made by the company (Skull Shaver) which makes the most popular dedicated head shavers that I have reviewed. The Skull Shaver brand has a patented ergonomically friendly design that made their head shavers a big hit; however, incorporating that design for hair clippers failed to impress me.

Beast Clipper Description & Features

The Skull Shaver Beast features the popular Skull Shaver patented ergonomics, as mentioned. These provide two ways of holding the trimmer: the first is the normal method of holding the sides, and the second is cupping the fingers underneath the head between the blades.

The 8 color-coded combs provide users with 4 different lengths (3mm, 6mm, 9mm, and 12mm) and 4 tapering combs for blending. The clipper combs are easy enough to attach and detach.

The rubberized handle/body provides a good grip when trimming or cutting, and the battery runtime of 60 minutes is a fair amount of runtime. The battery does need 4 hours to charge, and it can be used cordless or with the cord, so if the battery dies midway through a trim, it can be connected to the plug socket to finish the job off.

The Beast Clipper comes with a handy stand for when the clipper is not in use, and the indicators are useful which display in increments –how much charge is left.

It’s the best set of DIY hair clippers in terms of features, but let’s move on to the performance.

Beast Clipper Performance

As I mentioned at the beginning of the Beast Clipper section, the ergonomics were awkward. When trimming, the device is top-heavy, and using the fingers with the ergonomically friendly patented design does not work well.

I am able to trim my head when holding the trimmer at the sides, but I found myself preferring a normal set of clippers and most definitely wishing I had my Remington to use.

Beast Clipper — Wrapping It Up and Costs

While I am not a fan of the Skull Shaver Beast, other men have been happy with their purchase and its performance.

As the blade area is slim like a normal set of hair clippers, and the ergonomics are not great for a DIY Palm-Held clipper, I am out on this one, but you might want to check it out more (based on others liking it).

The Skull Shaver Beast Clipper costs around $89.95 (£69.99 – €69.99).

Philips QC5570/13

I reviewed the Philips QC5570 back in 2021 and it was a possible option for those looking for a palm held DIY clipper kit. Unfortunately it looks like that is no longer going to be available, after checking out sites like Amazon and various Philips websites.

If this becomes available again, I will provide more of a review, but my guess is Philips will introduce another model, or that is it from them for DIY Palm Held Clippers.

That just about wraps it up for now. Unfortunately, based on the DIY clippers I have used and reviewed, there are not many choices I can recommend that are worth using and buying.

The Remington is best by far; otherwise, I would go with a standard set of hair clippers.
