MÜHLE Sandalwood Shaving Soap Review – Mild or Heavy Scent?

On a quest to find the best sandalwood shaving soap there were more than enough brands and soaps to try out.

One soap that was a must to try out and review was the popular Muhle Sandalwood Shaving Soap.

The latest shaving soap I used and reviewed at ShavingAdvisor was the Floris Elite Shaving Soap. This is an incredible shaving soap, especially the scent with all of its notes, so the next soap was going to be hard to match that experience.

Sandalwood is a very popular ingredient used in shaving creams and soaps that offers various skin benefits, including healing properties. The much-loved woody scent has been used in cosmetics and healing oils for centuries and has found its rightful place within the men’s shaving industry.

Brand/Company: MÜHLE, founded in 1945 in Germany is a brand of shaving products and supplies well known and sold worldwide. It started as a family business in a laundry room, producing and selling shaving brushes. They now produce many cosmetics and a line of all the general shaving kit a person needs, including brushes, safety razors, soaps, and creams.

Muhle Sandalwood is sold in a 65g 2.29oz puck and in a porcelain dish. The soap only measures 60 mm, 2.4 inches in diameter, which is worth noting to make sure you have a bowl that fits or whether it is worth purchasing the porcelain dish first, then refilling when the first puck runs out.

MÜHLE’s Scent Description

Classy and distinctive, this fragrance contains fine notes of coriander, star anise and deep balsamic wood.

Ingredients: Potassium Palmate, Sodium Palmate, Potassium Stearate, Potassium Palm Kernelate, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Palm Kernelate, Glycerin, Aqua, Palm Kernel Acid, Cocamidopropyl Betain, Parfum, Pentasodium Pentetate, Tetrasodium Etidronate, Limonene.

The Lather and Shaving Experience

I must admit to having quite low expectations with the Muhle Sandalwood. Possibly because the last soap I used was excellent, and I think of Muhle as a company for safety razors (like the Muhle R41 or R89) and brushes.

Suffice to say, I was pleasantly surprised after starting out with low expectations.

Latherability – 8/10

I tried out lathering straight from the puck to face, then from the puck to bowl, then to the face. This was one of those soaps that was much better for me when lathering from the puck and straight onto the face. Lathering in the bowl was more challenging to get the lather thick and creamy, or it was just easier to get the creamy texture without a bowl.

An excellent, creamy, thick lather was easily created straight from the puck onto the face.

How Was The Texture of This Soap? – 9/10

A very creamy and thick texture, as mentioned. If it’s a little too thick, then a small amount of water soon foams it up if needed.

What Is Muhle Sandalwood Soap’s Scent Like? – 8/10

The scent was not as mild as I have experienced with other sandalwood shaving soaps, and it was something I really liked about this one.

Some notes are going on, and maybe I get some of the star anise, I am not sure. It’s a woody and masculine scent, though with enjoyable hints of something pleasant.

After shaving, the scent left on the face is very mild.

Overall Experience – 8/10

It’s one of the best sandalwood shaving soaps I have used, and the scent is terrific while shaving.

It does everything it needs to lubricate the skin and offer skin protection to prevent irritation. The post-shave feeling is also of comfort and of being somewhat moisturized.

Value for Money 8/10

Muhle Sandalwood Soap is not the cheapest for that sort of puck size and costs around $8 USD (£7 – 12 €). However, the good thing about a small puck size is it saves on buying a larger one that costs more to test out, and if you don’t like it, then less money is spent.

If you are testing out the Sandalwood and would like to see what the other 2 Muhle shaving soaps are also like, then a pack of three containing Sandalwood, Aloe Vera, and Sea Buckthorn is available to purchase at Amazon Here.

Any Common Consumer Issues, Complaints, or Positive Reports?

This is one of those shaving soaps that get very mixed opinions and reviews. Many will state how they like the mild scent, while others dislike how mild it is. Some comments state it’s not slick enough, while others say it’s the best soap they have used.

Overall the majority of reviews are positive and outnumber negatives.

The small size of the puck is mentioned frequently.

Final Thoughts – Who is the Muhle Sandalwood Shaving Soap Best Suited For?

The Sandalwood shaving soap from MÜHLE has a woody and masculine scent that pleases the senses, even if it does fade quickly.

It lathers, provides lubrication, and comforts the shave well enough, although it’s not a soap that wows everybody.

Gents who like using a Sandalwood soap are likely to try this out and enjoy comparing it with others. Anyone who wishes to try out Muhle shaving soaps could purchase the 3 pack of three different scents, including the Sandalwood.

If you enjoy having a lovely woody scent while shaving but wish for that to fade quickly before applying aftershave, this Sandalwood is a good option as it won’t interfere with your aftershave scent.
