Bald Boss Face & Scalp Moisturiser Review
Continuing on the campaign to find the best moisturizers for my balding bonce that can also mattify and reduce shine, or at least not increase shine, led me to the stuff from The Bald Brothers — Bald Boss Face & Scalp Moisturiser.
I love the brand name and how they got started. Much like Shaving Advisor and I, these bald brothers ran a website providing guides and reviews for gents with bald heads and turned it into a business and brand of products (I haven’t done this part).
The Bald Boss cream did a very good job of moisturizing but did not provide much of a matte effect. I could see how those who lean towards more dry or even flakey skin would be best suited for this product.
Let’s have a proper look at this face and scalp cream.
Features and Description
Firstly, the brothers state that the cream can be used on the face and scalp to moisturize and hydrate the skin. They also claim that the skin will not feel or look greasy, and it will provide a matte effect.
The above description (marketing talk) is exactly what I want!
Unlike the last four creams I tested and reviewed that come in tubes (apart from the Men Expert Hydra Energetic Anti-Shine that came in a push cap short bottle), the Bald Boss comes in a tub.
The cream is quite thick, so it makes sense to be contained in a tub rather than squeezed out of a tube.
Ingredients
The ingredients list is pretty long, with a lot of oils going on. The oils make sense for moisturizing and reducing dryness but not for mattifying.
I did not find the ingredient list on the website, so I had to put my glasses on and read the label on the box. To read them off the tub, I would need a magnifying glass (the writing is so small). I would suggest they put the ingredient profile on the website’s product description page.
The stars of the show (ingredients) include Apricot Seed Oil, Olive Oil, and Coconut Oil. These are all said to have properties that hydrate, moisturize, and nourish the skin and may have many other benefits.
It also contains Shea Butter, which softens skin and can be soothing, among other things. If you do not have enough oils yet, you will get Sunflower Seed and Lime Seed Oil included.
The cream does contain cetearyl alcohol, behenyl alcohol, and other ingredients that help stabilize the cream and other effects to make it the consistency that it is.
Take a look at the full ingredients list below if you have sensitivities. As always (the brothers state this too on the box), test it out first on a small skin area.
Aqua (Water), Cetearyl Alcohol, Prunus Armeniaca (Apricot) Kernel Oil, Glycerin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Polysorbate 60, Phenoxyethanol, Tapioca Starch, Benzyl Alcohol, Avena Sativa (Oat) Kernel Flour, Methylheptylglycerin, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Seed Oil, Stearic Acid, Xanthan Gum, Zinc Oxide, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Seed Oil, Allantoin, Ethylhexylglycerin, Sodium Hyaluronate, Tocopherol, Dehydroacetic Acid, Polymethylsilsesquioxane
Scent
I do get a very mild scent from this cream, which could be the apricot, but it has no real fragrance.
No scent is a good thing for those who will be applying aftershave or any other scented product.
Using Bald Boss Face & Scalp Moisturiser
I used the cream for about 3 weeks, either daily or every two days. I was testing out a new head shaver (FreeBird FlexSeries Pro) for a month, so I got to use this cream after head shaving on many occasions.
The brothers state to use it twice daily, but I would find this routine more suitable for guys who have quite dry, flaky, or damaged skin. I only used it once a day as I found it felt a little greasy as the day went on. I don’t always have dry skin, and I would say my skin leans on the oily side.
I did apply it to my face as well, despite not having dry skin. I had a dry patch near my nose; weirdly, after just buying this cream and after a couple of days of applying it, the dry patch cleared up.
I only had to use a very small amount or, like the label says, a pea-sized portion.
I did not find that it mattified very well, but it did not increase shine either. I have found other creams to mattify better, like the Formula 10.0.6 Seriously Shine Free and, of course, the No1 mattifier (Zero Shine). However, the Bald Boss has the maximum effect on moisturizing compared to some others.
While my head and especially my face felt kind of greasy to the touch after wearing the cream until the end of the day, the skin or scalp did not look greasy.
I did get a powdered feeling after first applying the cream. However, I get this from other matte moisturizing creams. The powdered feeling does not linger, and it’s not troublesome.
It’s not a cream I would use if I were going to be in the sun. I need more protection, and those oils are bound to lap up the sun too much.
Value For Money
The Bald Boss Face & Scalp Moisturiser costs around $20 (USD) and £19 in the UK.
That’s a bit more expensive than some moisturizers, and then we have some that are in smaller tubes that would cost about the same when matching the amounts and prices.
I would say it’s not a bad price point, and a little goes a long way. Maybe a tub, when using it twice a day on the head and face, would last two months (maybe more), and for me, using it every day (once) or every two days is going to last for three months (or more).
Final Thoughts – Verdict (Who’s It For?)
It is a great moisturizer and ideal for guys who shave their heads and get dry and flakey skin.
I would regard this as best suited for guys with normal to dry skin and not those that have normal to oily skin (like mine)–unless the head is going through a dry patch.
I would not consider it as best suited for mattifying. But as stated above, it does not increase or make the head shiny either.
All those wonderful oils combined most definitely give the skin some nourishment and deep moisturization.
Look after your heads, gents!
