Bee Bald Smooth Daily Moisturizer Review
My balding head grooming adventures have guided me towards finding moisturizers and, specifically, creams that mattify that shiny head look.
The next cream we are taking a look at today is The Bee Bald Smooth Daily Moisturiser.
I recently tested out and reviewed Headblade HeadLube Matte Moisturizing Lotion, and it went quite well. It moisturized and did help reduce shine, and it was priced fairly.
Bee Bald and HeadBlade seem to be direct competitors, but Bee Bald is more about creams, whereas HeadBlade has various bald head products, including their popular head razors (i.e., HeadBlade ATX and Moto).
Cut to The Chase — I was quite underwhelmed with the cream and expected more, but I like the ingredients a lot. There was no lasting mattifying effect apart from the standard first application effect. Was my expectations too high? Maybe!
Let’s take a closer look at what’s in the cream, what Bee Bald tells us it should do, and an experienced-based opinion. I will wrap it up with who it might be best suited for in the final thoughts.
I am a big fan of these small independent businesses like Bee Bald and always hope their products perform well and at least compete with the bigger brands (who doesn’t like to support the little guys? Product performance always comes first, though!
Features and Description
The first thing I noticed- which I should have known when buying the cream- was that it’s a pretty small tube. I guess I was expecting close to the same size I got from the last stuff I used from HeadBlade, which is a 5 fl oz (148 ml) tube.
The tube is a standard open cap and squeeze it like a toothpaste tube type of application.
I had to re-look at what the cream should do, as stated by Bee Bald, as I originally focused too much on mattifying. It’s mostly a daily moisturizer, and here is what Bee Bald tells us:
Bee Bald Smooth Daily Moisturiser tones and hydrates while working to reduce and prevent the buildup of oil and shine. Fine lines, wrinkles, and dry patches are moisturized and smoothed so skin feels cool, fresh, and comfortable all day.
So I take that as the moisturizing will prevent bald head shine rather than mattify it (not the same as cream like Zero Shine By DermiMatch, which mattifies).
Ingredients
I dont know if the Bee Bald cream ticks any free-from and cruelty-free boxes as they do not state any of this in the product description.
The cream contains a long list of ingredients, and some of the stars of the show include:
- Shea Butter: A proven moisturizer used in many cosmetics, including shaving creams.
- Ginger Root: My research tells me it helps prevent wrinkles and fine lines.
- Glycerin: A humectant used that can prevent a product from drying out and also helps provide lubrication of shaving creams and soaps.
- Licorice Root: Acts as an antioxidant, estrogenic, anti-inflammatory, and skin-whitening agent
- Honey Extract: Honey is also a humectant that can retain moisture and keep skin hydrated. It is also said that honey provides anti-wrinkle and anti-aging antioxidants.
- Bee Pollen: Bee pollen seems to be a kind of supper ingredient used in cosmetics that includes antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties.
That is a heck of a lot of skin-nourishing ingredients in a small tube. The humectants retaining moisture is likely to be an effect that prevents shine rather than reducing if that makes sense.
You can see the full list of ingredients below to check if you are sensitive to any of them. It does contain fragrance, which may be an irritant for some men.
Water (Aqua), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Glycerin, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG-100 Stearate, Cetyl Alcohol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ethylhexylglycerin, Phenoxyethanol, Cetearyl Olivate, Sorbitan Olivate, Carbomer, Aminomethyl Propanol, Potassium Sorbate, Allantoin, Fragrance, Tocopheryl Acetate, Tetrasodium Glutamate Diacetate, Titanium Dioxide, Honey Extract, Propylene Glycol, Propolis Cera (Bee Pollen), Glycyrrhiza Glabra (Licorice) Root Extract, Butylene Glycol, Lycium Barbarum (Goji Berry) Fruit Extract, Pentylene Glycol, Hydroxyphenyl Propamidobenzoic Acid, Bisabolol, Zingiber Officinale (Ginger) Root Extract.
Scent
There is a slight scent when first applying the cream. However, that does wear off quite quickly. The wearing off could be a benefit for those who do not want a particular scent left.
I can’t pinpoint the scent. I just pick up a clean fragrance.
I did find that after rubbing my head after a couple of hours of applying the cream, I got a powdery smell. It was not overpowering, and I had to make contact with it. I have had this with other creams, so it’s not a deal breaker.
Using Bee Bald Smooth Daily Moisturiser
I applied Bee Bald Smooth Moisturiser daily for about a week or so. I used it twice after head shaving with an electric head shaver (that’s a MicroTouch Titanium Head Shaver in the photo below) and at other times after showering.
The cream can be used on the face as well. However, I do not require it and only use creams on my face on rare occasions (too much sun or something like that).
Bee Bald states to use a small amount, and that is all I needed. A very small blob of this stuff does go a long way.
It was slightly greasy when I first applied it, which soon dissipated, and I was left with a soothing feeling.
The matte effect was apparent at first, but any moisturizer will provide this effect. However, the matte effect wore off within a couple of hours or maybe less. Its primary job is not to mattify, so I can’t judge it too much on that.
I was happy it was thicker than the HeadLube Matte stuff I had previously used, which was very watery.
Here are the before and after photos below, which only show a small amount of mattifying effect.
Value for Money
A small tube costs around $10 (USD), which is quite pricey for a 1.7fl oz (50 ml), but then again, only a small amount is required each time.
Using daily, I would guess a tube would last a month.
The list of ingredients with properties that are proven to be good for skincare leads me towards it being priced okay.
Final Thoughts – Verdict
I was happy to find out more about the ingredient list, which made me feel good about what I was putting on this balding bonce of mine.
I wrote at the start that I was underwhelmed, but in a way, I got thinking –what do I expect? After all, all it needs to do is moisturize my skin and offer it some benefits –which it did do.
I thought it was pricey, but then I looked at some other creams and realized it was not a bad price after all.
Any balding gent could try Bee Bald Smooth Daily Moisturizer. However, if you are looking for a longer matte effect–then others, like the Headblade HeadLube Matte Lotion or the Zero Shine By DermiMatch (if you want absolute matte and are willing to pay), would be worth checking out.
I am going to try more of the products made by Bee Bald while also checking out the next moisturizer and mattifying creams to test and review.
