Headblade HeadLube Matte Moisturizing Lotion Review

Reviewer holding a tube of Headblade HeadLube matte lotion next to his head

The latest testing of bald head care products that provide benefits for one’s balding bonce led me to try–HeadLube Matte Moisturizing Lotion by HeadBlade.

Moisturizing and reducing shine. Many of us balding gents are looking for that ideal combo–that does both very well, and that is what HeadBlade told me its tube of lotion would do.

A big name in bald head care products, ‘HeadBlade,’ produces popular bald head razors (HeadBlade ATX and HeadBlade Moto). I’ve used and reviewed these previously and like their unique, niched-down approach to products.

A lot of these men’s grooming companies that have their flagship products (HeadBlade’s is the Razors) create a product line in addition to their best-selling products that got them noticed and on the consumer’s map. However, a great or good flagship product does not make the rest great or good, but most definitely worth trying out–I would say!

Let’s take a closer look at what HeadLube Matte Moisturizing Cream should do and how it actually faired after massaging some of this shine-reducing cream on my balding bonce a few times.

The HeadLube Matte comes in a typical tube with a pop-open top cap. It can be stood up when it’s not in use in the bathroom or wherever you keep your men’s grooming supplies.

You’ve got some simple usage directions on the back of the tube and a clear ingredients list. The directions state we can apply this whenever the skin feels dry or after shaving.

If I were to travel with this tube, I would put some tape around the seam of the cap to prevent it from opening and leaking. I can see the potential of this tube opening and leaking its kind of watery lotion out.

I can’t speak for the Noncomedogenic (should not clog your pores) aspect of the lotion, as that is not anything I am able to see. I am happy to hope that is what it does, though!

Ingredients

It’s good to see it ticks some of the free-from and cruelty-free boxes.

Like many cosmetics, the ingredient list contains a bunch of items that only make sense to those with a laboratory degree. They don’t list these on the website or on Amazon, where I bought mine, so they are worth checking if you have sensitivities to anything (see below).

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Mineral Oil, Stearic Acid, Cetyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, PEG 100 Stearate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Aluminum Starch Octenylsuccinate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexyl Glycerin, Silica, Butyrospermum Parkii, Polysorbate 20, Lecithin, Piperita Mentha (Peppermint) Oil, Tocopheryl Acetate, Retinyl Palmitate, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Saccharum Offficinarum (Sugar Cane) Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Fruit Extract, Betaine, Hexylene Glycol, Pyrus Malus (Apple) Fruit Extract, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Hexapeptide-11.

Star Ingredients

The star ingredients like peppermint oil, tea tree oil, and Aloe are all popular for containing moisturizing, cooling, and healing properties that are good for most people’s skin. Aloe has always been good for me after a bit too much time in the sun (a sunburnt bonce is something I avoid these days–lessons learned).

  • Peppermint Oil
  • Tea Tree Oil
  • Aloe Leaf Juice

Scent

There is a clear scent of peppermint and tea tree and something else that I can’t pinpoint, but those two are the main notes I pick up on.

It’s neither a great scent nor bad. It is definitely not overpowering where others will smell it or overpower any aftershave on the face being used.

This scent wears off very quickly, and it leaves an almost slight plasticky or chemical smell, but that could just be my sensitive sense of smell (I have a nose for scents and smells). I know this stuff has to provide a matte effect, too, so it’s not just all about smelling good and moisturizing (I can dismiss that after-scent effect).

Using Headblade HeadLube Matte Lotion

For this review, I used the HeadLube Matte Lotion five times to get more than familiar with it. I monitored how long the matte effect would last under normal conditions (i.e., no sports or sitting under the sun).

How Easy is it to Use and Apply?

It is easy enough to apply and only requires a small amount (less than what is in my photo below–that was the first time I used it–wayyyy to much).

squeezing some Headblade HeadLube matte lotion from tube onto the hand

I massaged it into my scalp on each occasion until it dried up and left a whitish effect, which soon disappeared. It only took a minute to apply and leave to dry.

The main challenge is opening the tube without the watery lotion leaking out.

How is the Texture?

The lotion itself is very watery and more watery than I expected–it is not a cream. It is so watery that it leaks out of the tube when first opening the tube with the cap facing down or sideways, so it is best advised to open the tube with the top cap facing up.

The texture on the head, once the lube is applied, is a little powdery, which I expect with a mattifying lotion.

After the lotion dries on my head, I don’t feel or notice anything. Apart from the matte, no shine effect, which I wanted.

How Was The Moisturizing and Matte Effect?

The Headblade Matte Lube did moisturize my skin enough after shaving and showering, and it definitely reduced the shine.

AFTER

On each occasion, I could see I still had no shine for 5 hours or more, which is plenty enough for me. I dont need a 24-hour matte effect, and it’s mostly needed for certain events for a few hours (events or meetings with bright lights are the places I need it most).

I was left with a slight cooling effect after its application, which was fine and not overly cooling.

I did not find any greasy after-effects, which is a must for my oily skin.

Value for Money

A tube of Headblade HeadLube Matte Lotion costs around $15 USD and £13 GBP. I did not find the lotion available in Europe!

I would say it’s not a bad price. A tad bit is added for the brand, but it’s not at a bad price point when I compare it with others.

The 5 fl oz will provide many applications and should last for weeks or even months when used daily or every couple of days or so. Unless you spill loads out (as mentioned above).

Final Thoughts – Who Should Buy Headblade HeadLube Matte Moisturizing Lotion?

My main issue was the watery lotion leaking out of the tube. I guess Headblade could improve this by using a stand-up bottle with a pop cap or unscrewed top.

I had no other real issues with it, and it offered my head a moisturizer and a few hours or so of matte effect. It does not give the type of matte effect that a product like Zero Shine By DermiMatch does, but that’s more expensive and involves other factors that would need to be considered.

Any balding gents could try Headblade’s moisturizing and mattifying lube out and see if it is the one that does what they need. We all have to find what suits us best, and this one is worth a shot.
