Cartridge Razor Review

OmniShaver Premium Review – A Unique Head Razor Experience

The OmniShaver Premium is among only a small selection of dedicated head razors.

Most head-shaving gents remove head hair with a safety or cartridge razor or a dedicated electric shaver. However, these razors designed specifically for head shaving are a great alternative option that many guys are impressed with.

The last razors I reviewed for head shaving were the HeadBlade Moto and HeadBlade ATX, so I was really pleased to pick up another brands razor, the OmniShave Premium —a new head-shaving toy to play with.

There is a lot I like about the OmniShaver, especially the speed it shaves and a super close feeling after. However, as always, there is more to the story which I cover in this review.

The Brand: OmniShaver is the brand name –based in the US. There is no about page on their website to get history; however, I know that their products have been on the market since at least 2019. While the main product is the OmniShaver, buyers can also purchase its accessories and related products.

This review will look closely at the all-important features and report how the OmniShaver Premium shaves and its usability. Then, finally, recommend who the razor would be best suited for — within the closing thoughts.

Description & Features

There is nothing quite like this shaver on the market in terms of design. It’s most definitely unique!

The razor pack comes with the blades set in the razor head, and some much-needed guides are enclosed.

  • Blades: Two five-bladed replacement cartridges are seated with the head section. Both sets of blades face inwards.
  • Self-Sharpening: OmniShaver states the blades are self-stropping and keep their sharpness while in use.
  • Head: The stainless steel head section is movable and moves in multiple directions while shaving along the various contours of the head. OmniShaver advises that the head can be heated in hot water (Max = 160 °F (70 °C), making the shave easier and more enjoyable.
  • Body:  The oval-shaped plastic body holds the blade head inside and has large openings through which water can flow for cleaning.
  • Blade Longevity: OmniShaver claims the blades last much longer than any other shavers.
  • Blade Replacement: The blades must be pushed out with a special tool. The plastic tool comes with a cartridge replacement pack when bought.

OmniShaver Premium vs Classic

The OmniShaver Classic is a disposable head razor that must be thrown away once the blades dull. The Premium is more weighty as the head section is made from stainless steel rather than plastic.

The Classic costs $14.95, and the Premium $22.00. It does not make sense to me to purchase the Classic and keep purchasing when new blades are required.

Using The OmniShaver – Technique

The OmniShaver is very unique when it comes to using it and having the right technique. There are various useful guides online, and the instructions provided are comprehensive and to the point.

OmniShaver Premium instructions provided

The main technique is to use the razor with back-and-forth shaving strokes while applying enough pressure so the blades do not tug the hair.

This technique does take some practice as it’s significantly different from using a cartridge or safety razor.

As the instructions state clearly, the shaver can seriously cut the skin when it is not used correctly, caused when shaving with sideways crossing-over strokes –I was very weary while shaving.

No Rinsing The Blades

OmniShaver advises us not to rinse the blades while shaving, which is the opposite advice for any other razor. However, I followed the advice, and true enough, the razor kept shaving close without clogging.

Stropping Blades

I haven’t pulled stropping the OmniShaver blades idea out of thin air –OmniShaver recommends it!

Stropping is a technique used for various blades, including straight razor blade edges. The movement of the blade on leather or even jean material improves the sharpness (it does not sharpen, though).

Stropping the OmniShaver blades is possible and will enable them to last an extra few shaves. However, OmniShaver recommends that stropping can be done on the skin, which I am not sure would work as it needs a certain surface (I could be wrong, though).

Design and Build Quality

The size of the OmniShaver is about the size of a small matchbox with rounded sides. Like the HeadBlade razors, they don’t necessarily have to be large to shave the head well.

The simple stainless steel head that has plenty of movement works very well.

I feel the shaver’s sides could be rubberized and made with comfort in mind. Holding the shaver between the fingers and thumb is not that comfortable.

The five twin blades that do not have lubrication strips and rubberized microfin guides are quite different from other cartridge razors. The shaver gets along fine without the lubrication and rubberized strips, and I could not see them benefiting the razor, and having them could even hinder how they shave.

These double five-bladed cartridges uniquely face inwards toward each other. This cool feature allows one set of blades to alternate when moving back and forth.

I just wish the shaver’s body had a rubberized design that would fit better in the hand, giving more comfort. This is not to say it does not fit –it could just be better and improved on.

What Shaving Lubricant To Use?

The OmniShaver is best used with a good slick type of shaving lubricant and, as OmniShaver advises, a lubricant that does not clog too easily.

I used an extremely good shaving soap with which I did not whip up a lather. I had a good film of it rubbed into my hair and head; then I kept wetting my hands slightly and rubbing the soapy film on my head during the shave. It worked perfectly, and clogging was non-existent.

OmniShaver recommends a shave butter and suggests you may use their shaving butter if you wish to purchase it. Shaving butter provides that slick film I mentioned.

I don’t think a high-foaming lubricant or gel would be best suited. If you have nothing else at hand, then try and make whatever you do have create a thick film over the head and keep it wet.

Heating The Head

As OmniShaver suggests — the head can be heated in hot water (Max = 160 °F (70 °C). I gave it a go. While I can’t say I noticed a significant difference in the shave, it felt very nice on the face, and it’s worth doing if possible, if only for the nice warm feeling.

How Does OmniShaver Premium Perform and Shave?

I must admit, after reading about the potential for serious cuts from not shaving correctly, I was quite anxious when using the razor the first couple of times and very cautious.

I have had seven head shaves so far with the OmniShaver and will continue to use it and report back here with anything worth adding.

Once I found the back-and-forth technique without shaving sideways during strokes easier, I got into enjoying shaving with the OmniShaver.

It has provided a super close shave on all occasions.

I found this tugging thing happening that OmniShaver mentions when not applying enough pressure. That was expected!

I had two issues: shaving around the ears and the left-hand side while shaving was much trickier than the right (I am right-handed). When trying to get rid of hair leftovers near the ears, the razor can tug and never clears it up 100%. The left-hand side thing is just odd, and I find it hard to get the pressure right.

I noticed OmniShaver is aware of the shaving around the ears issue and have listened to their customers in some way, leading them to create a manual clear-up (touch-up) razor. However, you might as well just use your normal razor to clear up as I do.

While the OmniShaver gives a pretty fast shave once the technique improves, I don’t find it much quicker than a cartridge razor.

Replacing Blades and Cleaning

I have not had to replace the blades as yet. However, I am aware that I need to use the plastic blade removal tool that comes with the pack of four blades. This tool pushes the blades out of the head.

It would be good if these blades could be clipped in and out more easily. However, it’s not a deal breaker or a big issue, just different.

As OmniShaver suggests, just wash the blades after use under the tap with warm water. The gaps within the razor body make it easy to rinse the blades.

Value for Money

The OmniShaver Premium and replacement blades are not exactly cheap. However, I guess they are priced fairly based on what other cartridge and head razors cost.

  • OmniShaver Premium: $22 US – £18.99 UK – €23.99
  • Blade Replacements (x 4 = 2 sets): $17.99 – £17.99 UK – €18.99

It is worth keeping in mind that the four blades provided in the replacement pack cover 2 sets. So, we get to replace blades twice.

The OmniShaver and Blade replacements can be purchased from the OmniShaver website, Amazon, and maybe other stores.

Final Thoughts – Who is the OmniShaver Premium Best Suited For?

I found the OmniShaver a great innovative head-shaving tool that gives a very close shave. I feel some improvements could be made that would make it even better.

As you can see from above, I had three issues – one was shaving around the ears, and two was finding it awkward shaving on my left side. The third issue was wishing for the design to be more comfortable with rubberized sections and better body design.

Any head-shaving gents could give the OmniShaver a try. However, they need to be aware of paying for an extra razor and replacement blades when they could be using the same cartridge or safety razor for their head and face that they already own.

Women can also use the OmniShaver for leg shaving, and I imagine it can work very well along the larger leg areas. However, the ankle and knee areas might be a challenge, so the wife might not steal your head razor after all.

Based on ease of use, I prefer the HeadBlade ATX and Moto, which you might want to look at. I do like other aspects of the OmniShaver –as noted above that should be considered when comparing any razors.
