Geo.F. Trumper Spanish Leather Shaving Cream Review

BUYING OPTIONS

GEO.F. Trumper is on par with brands like TOBS (Taylor of Old Bond Street) when it comes to luxury shaving products, including shaving creams.

It’s hard to go wrong with TOBS, Trumper, and other traditional wet shaving brands (that all trade within the central London vicinity) when it comes to choosing a quality cream and soap.

Anyway. We are all about the Geo.F. Trumper Spanish Leather shaving cream today!

The Geo.F. Trumper Spanish Leather proved to be a slick shaving cream that produces a great lather from a small amount, with another slant on a floral musky-type scent.

Description and Features

I bought the Spanish Leather in a 200g/6.7fl-oz screw thread tub, but you can also buy a tubed version that contains 75g. The tub has useful notches on the top cap that help when removing it (non-slip kind of thing).

The first thing I did was pop the cap off and get a whiff. I got something pleasant (floral) and unusual hitting the nostrils, but more about that a bit further on (i.e., scent).

Ingredients

These shaving creams made by GEO.F. Thumper, including the Spanish Leather, are glycerin-based. Glycerin is a humectant that helps get that lather more full and hydrated, among other things like slickness.

We’ve got Stearic and Myristic Acid, which gives us some thickening of the cream and creaminess.

There is nothing written on the tub or website stating any free-from, natural, organic, or vegan type of thing, which is worth noting for those looking for that type of product.

You’ll notice it contains two parabens (i.e., Methylparaben and Propylparaben). These are preservatives that have brought some controversy to the cosmetics world. I’m not going into any of that, and I just want to highlight that the shaving cream contains these parabens.

The ingredient profile is ideal for a good, slick lather that stays on the face, but check the official list of ingredients below to see if you have sensitivities or object to certain additives.

Aqua (Water), Stearic Acid, Myristic Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Coconut Acid, Glycerin, Parfum (Fragrance), Triethanolamine, Sodium Hydroxide, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Coumarin, Citronellol, Linalool, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone, Eugenol, Benzyl Salicylate, Geraniol.

Scent

I did wonder what the heck Spanish leather should smell like. I have no idea, and I thought maybe it was just a theme-type thing (that’s likely) that the company used to match its fragrance profile.

smelling the scent of Geo.F. Trumper Spanish Leather Shaving Cream

The first whiff was floral with a slight spice, and, I guess, kind of woodsy fragrance.

I then took a look at the scent profile–you can see below:

  • Base Notes – Patchouli, Sandalwood, Vanilla
  • Middle Notes – Geranium, Rosemary, Rose
  • Top Notes – Clove, Lavender

I see why I get a sense of florals straight away and the mild spice from the Clove and then the musky Patchouli. There is quite a lot going on, which is kind of intriguing.

The scent lasts fairly well after the shave, and I can maybe pick it up for a good couple of hours afterward (which I like).

I got to like the scent more as I used it a few times compared to the first time. I think I was just trying to work out the scent profile too much!

Lather and Shaving Experience

GEO.F. Thumper is right when they state we only need a small amount for a rich lather. A small blob on the brush or in the shaving bowl goes a long way.

I would start with just a small scoop on the top of a finger, then see if that is enough after mixing the lather.

I tried out bowl and face lathering, and both worked very well with my Simpson Trafalgar T3 Synthetic Brush and Muhle Shaving Bowl. A good lather built up quickly enough!

The shaves were lubricated well enough and slick, and I got the protection needed (cushion) that gave me more than ideal shaving experience.

I added a little water as needed to the brush while shaving when I felt it drying up slightly, which is normal for me for soaps and creams.

My skin felt soft and lightly moisturized after the shave, and I tend to test out lubricants naked (i.e., without an after-balm, etc.). It was definitely not too dry, but a lot of guys are likely to need some balm.

Value For Money

While this cream is a bit more expensive than TOBS (Taylor Of Old Bond Street), we get an extra 50g in a tub, which somewhat evens out the price difference.

It was quite hard to find an accurate or agreed price in the US for a 200g/6.7fl-oz tub, and most stores sell the 75g tube (12 – 15 USD). The best price I could see for a tub was (28 USD).

If you can pick a tub or tube up at the above prices in the US, then it’s a good deal for a quality cream.

As expected in the UK, a 200g tube costs around £20, and a 75g tube costs £12, so a tub is a bargain, and the tube is not priced badly either if you are testing the stuff out.

If you are in certain EU countries, then the price is more or less equal to that in the UK.

Final Thoughts – Who Should Try It?

Everything is spot on with this shaving cream in terms of lubrication, latherability, and how a little goes a long way.

The only thing that would be an issue is whether this scent is right for you or not (subjective, of course). I can tell it won’t be for everyone, but my explanation above should give you some points on why you might like or dislike this kind of scent.

Of course, you will have an issue if you are anti-paraben, which is fair enough if you have concerns.

I did prefer the scent of the last cream I used from TOBS (Taylor of Old Bond Street Oud Shaving Cream). That Oud was something else, but it’s great to try various scents and brands.

Im definitely going to be trying another scent from GEO.F. Trumper very soon, as this was my introduction to their creams and soaps.

I must also find some Spanish Leather to sniff! Will it be similar??
