Remington QuickCut hair clipper

The Remington QuickCut HC4250 (Europe), also known as the Remington ShortCut Pro (USA) is a hair clipper with a unique design compared to your normal set of clippers.

This was one of those curiosity buys coupled with ‘I’m not so sure this thing could perform very Well’ but it’s worth checking out and reviewing.

The good news is that the HC4250 palm-held DIY clippers performed better than expected, as you’ll see in this review.

As you can see by its name (QuickCut or ShortCut) the HC4250 was designed primarily for those to cut, trim or shave their hair quickly and in true DIY style.

In this Remington HC4250 review, I will run through the important features, provide the results after testing it out, and suggest who it is best suited for.

Description & Features

Unboxed, a buyer gets the hair clipper, 9 fixed combs, travel pouch, cleaning brush, charger plug and cord, bottle of oil, and user manual.

  • Handle/Body – With this hair clipper, there is no handle. The whole unit that’s much bigger than standard hair clippers is the body and is held at the sides by a user while trimming hair.
  • Blades – The stainless steel blades are much wider than the blades on standard hair clippers, and they curve. The blades can be released and taken off for cleaning if needed.
  • Combs – The HC4250 comes with 9 detachable combs for hair cutting at various lengths (1.5 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4.5 mm, 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm, 15 mm). Each comb has the size marked in inches and millimeters and grades ( grade 0 – 5). These combs are easily clipped on and off the hair clipper.
  • Cordless/Corded – It can be used with its cord or cordless. Not to be used corded near water for obvious safety reasons.
  • Charging and Battery – The charge time from a flat battery is around 4 hours, giving a user up to 40 minutes of battery life. When it’s charging, the LED blinks and then stops blinking once it is fully charged.
  • Washable – The Remington HC4250 can be cleaned using the cleaning brush provided, and there is a cleaning port that a user may run water through to clean it thoroughly.
  • Warranty – Buyers have the right to return when they make a purchase from the store. Buyers are also given 100-day money-back guarantee with Remington if they register the shaver online. Registering your product online within 28 days will give you an extra 1-year guarantee on top of the 2 years (3 years total).

How well does the Remington HC4250 perform?

I was really looking forward to trying out the Remington HC4250, but I must admit my expectations were quite low as I just thought it was a gimmicky product that looks great in theory but would not do a great job.

However, I was very surprised……..

It did a great and quick job at trimming my balding bonce down to about 0.5 mm, in no time at all, without a comb attachment.

shaving with the Remington QuickCut hair clipper

As usual, I put this hair clipper to the test for about a month and found I liked it straight away and didn’t need any more time to convince myself it was a good product.

I am a balding guy and will alternate shaving my head to the wood with a safety or cartridge razor and sometimes an electric head shaver. Since balding, I have always needed to use hair clippers to either cut my hair without a comb as close to the scalp as possible or to cut the hair close enough before using a razor.

The extra wide blade length and curve make it so much easier to self-cut my hair compared to using other hair clippers. The Remington really does get the task done efficiently and quickly.

Other hair clippers do give a slightly closer shave when using them without any combs, and they have more power. However, it’s not noticeable when the ease of use of the Remington shines so well.

I could shave the back of my head, top of my head, and around the ears with ease. The wider blade seems to help cover trimming the top and back of the head very well compared to the standard clippers.

Is the Remington HC4250 any good for cutting hair at different lengths (eg., 15 mm on top and 6 mm sides)?

It is best used when cutting hair at one of the comb lengths or without a comb all over the head, without trying to make the joining hairline align well. Proper haircuts are best done by professional barbers I reckon; however, some guys are great at blending in different sizes by themselves!

I am not skilled in cutting my own hair at various lengths personally and don’t need to, but that d doesn’t mean you cant with this hair clipper.

Remington states: Whether it be trimming, detailing, or edging, you are guaranteed total control.

I would say a person can trim but not do much with detailing and edging (trimming edges) very well. It’s hard to do this ourselves, so we have barbers to go to.

Remington also state: Suitable for grading, tapering, and trimming, this versatile hair clipper is all you need to create your desired look.

Again I don’t believe all guys can do this alone without assistance. Tapering needs two hands.

Remington might have overdone it a bit stating what the Remington HC4520 can achieve. However, for an all-over self-cut from 1 mm – 15 mm, it is exceptionally good.

One thing I felt was missing, which all other hair clippers provide, is blade adjustment. I would only ever use the shortest, but it’s a good feature to have for some guys.

Body Trimming – Grooming

The Remington has been a great tool for me when body grooming and shaving or trimming down bodily hair. It’s the best trimmer I have used for trimming the armpits, as the blade area is so wide.

It swoops over and clears up the chest, armpit, and probably other hair very fast. I don’t think Remington had body grooming in mind, but it has turned out to be extremely good at it.

This reason alone makes the HC4520 a keeper for me, and if you bodygroom, try it out!

What length of hair can it cut?

It is best suited for hair that is only up to about an inch or two in length. Anything more than two inches might strain the motor too much and maybe cause the clipper blades not to cut very well.

Build quality and ergonomics – 8/10

While the QuickCut is mostly made from plastic and rubber, it feels solid enough to last up to 5 or maybe longer.

The ergonomics are great for self-cutting. Much better than standard hair clippers, especially for cutting around the back and top of the head.

Holding & Grip – 9/10

Great ergonomics make holding the Remington very easy. A user can hold the rubber sides and/or place a thumb or fingers on the red and black grip area (alternating is what works best).

Exceptionally good!

Ease of Use – 9/10

Everything can be done easily, from attaching a comb, trimming, cleaning, charging, and everything else.

Cleaning and Maintenance – 9/10

Remington designed the HC4250 extremely well in terms of cleaning after using the clipper. Users can run water through the top section with the clipper power on and the wash port.

It’s worth mentioning that the clipper will perform much better and last longer when it’s cleaned after every use.

A user can also remove the blades which helps to clean it more thoroughly, but you wouldn’t need to do this every time it’s used.

Adding a few drops of the oil supplied is best used to keep the blades working smoothly and give them a longer life span.

Charging and battery life – 8/10

I have used this clipper for about 5 minutes or less many times and then just charged it back up without waiting for the battery to go flat. An indicator for how much charge is left would be very useful, but it is not a deal breaker and it can be used with the cord attached if needed.

I guess after a period of time the longevity of battery life will reduce, which is quite normal for many rechargeable goods.

Value for money – 9/10

Very good value for money and priced up at around $59.99 USD (£40.00 GBP – 49,99 € EU, $59.99 CAD).

Any Common Consumer Issues, Complaints, or Positive Reports?

Like myself, balding guys found the Remington HC4250 to work better than any other hair clipper for self-cutting without using an attachment. It really shines here!

There have been more than a few reports about the battery life not lasting, clipper combs breaking, and other minor faults. However, apart from battery longevity there are no consistent complaints.

Final Thoughts – and who is the Remington HC4250 best suited for?

The Remington HC4520 is the ideal hair clipper for those that need to self-cut frequently and keep their hair short all over. A heck of a lot of balding guys that don’t want a shiny shaved bald head and prefer up to a millimeter of hair love it.

I would love to see a competitor like Wahl and other brands come in and make an even better model of this product. I can see this being improved in many ways, including adjustable blades, a battery life indicator, and other design features; even if the price went up quite considerably, I would buy it.

Like dedicated electric head shavers, the HC4520 is a modern palm-held device that has certainly attracted a crowd of guys looking for quick and efficient ways of getting the head shaving and trimming job done.
