Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion Review – Does It Prepare Well Enough?

On my journey to find the best products for men’s grooming and shaving I have come across various pre-shaves and pre-electric shave lotions . This has naturally led to testing out, using and reviewing the popular Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion.

There is a big debate and sometimes a divide in the wet shaving with razors world about whether a pre-shave should be used, and if you have a good cream or soap some say you don’t need a pre-shave. This is not the case with electric shavers, and this is because they are primarily designed to be used when shaving dry (yes, many can be used wet shaving as well, now) which makes a pre-shave routine important.

Anything that can prep the skin before shaving with an electric shaver and get the skin and hair ready to be shaved is a good thing. It’s even more important for those with oily or sensitive skin.

The Brand – The German company Speick is a family-owned business that has a history dating back to 1928. The first product that started the business off was curd soap for washing clothes, and then they branched off into cosmetic soap and other cosmetics. Speick is a plant extract used within many of the company’s products including shaving supplies.

In this review of the Speick Pre Electric Lotion I will share what it is supposed to achieve, what it actually does achieve after using it before electric shaving on a good few occasions, and a few notes at the end to wrap it up about who it is best suited for.

Speick Pre Electric Description

Speick states the pre-electric shave lotion aims to promote an electric shave which is gentle and kind to the skin by gently causing the stubble hair to become erect.

The lotion is free from colours, silicones, parabens and minerals oils and it is also gluten- and lactose-free. It does contain alcohol though!

Ingredients

Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate, Aqua (Water), Valeriana Celtica (Speick) Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Menthol, Camphor, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

It is suitable for both sensitive and normal skin. It does contain parfum which is a sensitivity for some men.

Applying – Just add a little in your hand and rub gently into facial hair. It contains alcohol and feels similar to aftershave, and it will evaporate, so I would apply it quickly.

Pre-Shave, Shaving and Post-Shaving Experience

I had to use the Speick Pre-Shave a good few times before I could get a full picture of what I liked and what I did not like so much.

I did try out the lotion after washing my face thoroughly first and then drying it to remove as much oil from my skin. And I did try it without washing my face first, and on an occasion, showering straight after shaving.

It seems odd to shower after as all the scent and ingredients are washed away. To be honest, on that occasion I did not want the scent of Speick Pre-Shave Lotion left on my skin.

Applying The Lotion

Applying was easy enough, although I was not sure how much I should use. I’ve found that using a similar amount and applying in the same way as using a non-spray bottle of aftershave is how it works. Add a few more drops on the hand and then on the face if there is not enough applied at first.

I could not notice anything when applying. I guess I was waiting to see something happen like what happens with creams or soaps that produce a lather.

What I did notice though was my hands felt very soft and looked kind of oily. I get a kind of odd oily dry feeling from the lotion on my hands.

I’m not sure the oily effect is what I want or need. I already have oily skin and want something that dries up before shaving.

The Scent

The scent of Speick Pre-Shave is quite strong and just like aftershave. It’s not a bad scent and some guys would really like it, however, if I want a different scent on my face that morning I would have to wash the pre-shave off.

I could go with this scent at times but it isn’t what I want really. I guess I need an electric pre-shave that has a scent I want or a fragrance-free type.

The scent is a deal-breaker for me and I guess for many guys.

Shaving

I did feel an extra bit of comfort while shaving. I used a Braun Series 7 shaver because it’s quite an aggressive shaver that I thought could benefit from some comfort shaving assistance.

The pre-shave most definitely provided that extra bit of comfort, and possibly a reduction in possible irritation effects from shaving, but I did not feel it causes stubble hairs to become erect like what the company states.

I did notice a couple of flat-laying hairs while shaving and they were no easier to shave off with the pre-shave.

Despite not making the hairs erect I’m going to go with the shaving experience as being positive. Extra comfort, reduced irritation and some improvement in how the shaver moves across the face easier are all welcomed.

Post-Shave

An aspect I loved about using the Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion was the post-shave feeling. The skin feels wonderfully soft after shaving.

You just gotta be okay with the scent which I’m not a fan of.

Final Thoughts – Who is Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion for?

This pre-shave lotion most definitely makes an electric shave experience more comfortable and helps to reduce some skin friction which prevents or reduces irritation.

I’m not sure if I needed something that dries up the skin more which I am going to be testing out.

A deal breaker is going to be the scent for some guys and it was for me. On the other hand, if you get serious razor burn without using Speick then I guess the fragrance won’t be a deal-breaker.

Speick Pre Electric Shave is among the best pre-shaves worth trying out.
