Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion Review – Does It Prepare Well Enough?

During my search for the best products for men’s grooming and shaving, I encountered various pre-shave and pre-electric shave lotions. This has naturally led to testing out, using, and reviewing the popular Speick Pre-Electric Shave Lotion.

There is a significant debate and sometimes a divide in the wet shaving with razors world about whether a pre-shave should be used, and if you have a good cream or soap, some say you don’t need a pre-shave. This is not the case with electric shavers, and this is because they are primarily designed to be used when shaving dry (yes, many electric shavers can be used for wet shaving as well, now), which makes a pre-shave routine important.

Anything that can prepare the skin before shaving with an electric shaver and get the skin and hair ready for shaving is beneficial. It’s even more important for those with oily (that’s me) or sensitive skin.

In this review, I will share what it is supposed to achieve, what it actually achieves after using it on a few occasions, and provide a few notes at the end to wrap it up, including who it is best suited for.

Description

Speick states that the pre-electric shave lotion aims to promote a gentle electric shave, which is kind to the skin, by gently causing the stubble hair to become erect.

The lotion is free from colors, silicones, parabens, and mineral oils, and it is also gluten- and lactose-free. It does contain alcohol, though!

Ingredients

Alcohol, Isopropyl Myristate, Aqua (Water), Valeriana Celtica (Speick) Extract, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Menthol, Camphor, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

It is suitable for both sensitive and normal skin. It contains perfume, which is sensitive for some men.

Applying – Just add a little in your hand and rub gently into facial hair. It contains alcohol and has a similar feel to aftershave, so I suggest applying it quickly.

Pre-Shave, Shaving, and Post-Shave Experience

I had to use the Speick Pre-Shave a few times before I could get a full picture of what I liked and what I didn’t like so much.

I tried out the lotion after thoroughly washing and drying my face to remove as much oil from my skin as possible. And I did try it without washing my face first, and on occasion, showering straight after shaving.

It seems odd to shower after, as all the scent and ingredients are washed away. To be honest, on that occasion, I did not want the scent of Speick Pre-Shave Lotion left on my skin.

Applying The Lotion

Applying was easy enough, although I wasn’t sure how much to use. I’ve found that using a similar amount and applying it in the same way as using a non-spray bottle of aftershave is how it works.

I recommend adding a few more drops to the hand and then applying them to the face if there is not enough coverage initially.

I could not notice anything when applying. I guess I was waiting to see something happen like what happens with creams or soaps that produce a lather.

What I did notice, though, was that my hands felt very soft and looked kind of oily. I get a kind of odd, oily, dry feeling on my hands from the lotion.

I’m not sure the oily effect is what I want or need. I already have oily skin and want something that helps dry it up before shaving.

The Scent

The scent is quite strong, just like aftershave. It’s not a bad scent, and some guys would really like it; however, if I want a different scent on my face that morning, I would have to wash the pre-shave off.

I could go with this scent at times, but it’s not what I really want. I suppose I need an electric pre-shave with a scent I like or a fragrance-free option.

The scent is a deal-breaker for me, and I guess it is for many guys.

Shaving

I did feel an extra bit of comfort while shaving. I used a Braun Series 7 shaver because it’s quite an aggressive shaver that I thought could benefit from some comfort shaving assistance.

The pre-shave most definitely provided that extra bit of comfort and possibly reduced the potential irritation effects from shaving. Still, I did not feel it caused stubble hairs to become erect, as the company states.

I did notice a couple of flat-laying hairs while shaving, and they were no easier to shave off with the pre-shave.

Although it didn’t make the hairs stand erect, I’m going to consider the shaving experience as positive. Extra comfort, reduced irritation, and some improvement in how the shaver moves across the face are attributes I welcome.

Post-Shave

An aspect I loved about using the Speick Pre-Electric Shave Lotion was the post-shave feeling. The skin feels wonderfully soft after shaving.

You just gotta be okay with the scent, which I’m not a fan of.

Final Thoughts – Verdict (Whose It For?)

This pre-shave lotion definitely makes an electric shave experience more comfortable and helps reduce skin friction, which in turn prevents or reduces irritation.

I’m not sure if I need something that dries up the skin more.

A deal breaker is going to be the scent for some guys, and it was for me. On the other hand, if you get serious razor burn without using Speick, then I guess the fragrance won’t be a deal-breaker.

Speick is among the best pre-shaves worth trying out.
