Believe it or not, when my editor told me I would be reviewing shaving soaps I had a small jump of joy. One of my favorite parts of shaving is trying out new soaps and scents to see how they feel and work.
First on our list here is a shaving soap I have seen advertised a fair few places. Then again, that might just be Google really pushing its targeted advertising because they know I am a sucker.
Sir Hare has several different scents when it comes to their shaving soap. So today we went with the Original Barbershop Scent.
Brand/Company: Sir Hare is a family-owned business that has been in the market since 2014. They offer an extensive catalog of shaving supplies ranging from soaps, razors, disposable blades, skin care products, and full shaving kits. They focus almost exclusively on men’s grooming and men’s skin care. Their products are priced very competitively, so they make a great option for gifts or just dipping your toes into wet shaving without breaking the bank.
Sir Hare Shaving Soap Description
When the soap arrived to me by regular mail, the first thing that hit me was the nice and friendly packaging. I know that sounds weird, but the Sir Hare mascot is pretty cute looking and just the right kind of mascot for men’s grooming.
The Soap itself actually looks like slowly melting ice cream. That is a positive in my book just aesthetically.
The bowl is deep enough so you can lather using the soap and bowl itself rather than having to transfer your brush to a lathering bowl. Personally, I don’t think it’s deep enough.
I’ve seen soaps advertising that, but honestly, for the amount of lather I need, a cup or bowl to build the lather in is necessary. It can also lead to you using too much of the soap when you attempt to build the lather, meaning you’ll run out of soap faster.
Ingredients: Stearic Acid, Water, Tallow, Palm Oil, Potassium Hydroxide, Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Fragrance, Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, and Caster Oil.
About the Scent
The Barbershop scent is complex to say the least.
The first thing that hits my nose is something akin to an antiseptic aroma. It’s clean and sharp. Not bad like a hospital, but very much a clean kitchen or barbershop (ironically enough).
The second part of the scent hits with a floral aroma. Gentle wildflowers combined with a woody smell. It’s like walking in a forest in spring.
Finally, the scent finishes with a citrus-like aroma. Not any specific citrus though. It is sort of a mix of lemon and lime with just a hint of orange to it.
The scent is not heavy in the least, and finishes very clean. If you have any other scents in your shaving routine, like scented pre or post shave, they will quickly overwhelm the soap’s aroma.
The Lather and Shaving Experience
For my review of this Shaving Soap, I shaved twice two days apart from each other. During my shave, I made three passes: one with the grain, one across the grain, and one against the grain.
How well does it Lather?
Sir Hare’s soap builds a nice lather, but it takes a bit of elbow grease to really build it well. 40-50 seconds of seriously building the lather in my Proraso Shave Bowl finally got it to the texture I really wanted.
When applying the lather, it goes on smoothly. It is relatively light and foamy, feeling like a really light bar soap. Most of the other soaps I have used are heavier, while this one really feels like I could make a bubble beard out of it.
It could be on the lighter side for some guys who prefer heavier lathers. I am one of those guys, honestly.
How is the Texture?
The overall texture of the soap is like solid butter. It has a creamy feel to it, but there is no residue. When you rinse this stuff off, there is no greasy film or oily texture. It feels clean and nice.
The soap dries very quickly. A few moments away from water and it goes from soft to hard easily. When charging it up before you shave, I would recommend adding more water than you normally need and leaving your brush slightly more damp.
How is the Overall Shave?
Shaving with this is nice and easy. It goes on smoothly and rinses off really quickly. It is light and thin enough that it won’t gum up your razor at all. At the same time, it has a lubrication to the oil texture that helps a razor glide over your skin with little to no issues.
After the shave, it left my skin feeling dryer than normal. Not a bad dry, but definitely a clean feeling. If you like to prevent an oily skin feeling, this is definitely for you.
Value for the Money?
I’m not going to lie to you, this is one portion where Sir Hair excels. At $14.99 USD for this shaving soap, it is a steal. It is of a very good quality soap for a really great price. Shipping might be an issue if you decide to go with something faster than normal mail, but that isn’t too terrible.
Any Common Consumer Issues, Complaints, or Positive Reports?
Overall reviews for the Sir Hair soap are overwhelmingly positive. Many people love this soap. They rave about the scent, the texture, and the lather all over the place. They also love the price, with a great deal of reviewers saying they got it as a gift or gave it as a gift.
The only real negatives I have seen around the internet are the same issues I have with the soap drying quickly. You will really need to dial in how much of a water/soap ratio is necessary to get a good lather.
The other issue people have spoken about is the scent, and I won’t deny it isn’t an acquired taste. Not bad, but definitely something to get used to.
Final Thoughts – Who is the Sir Hare Shaving Soap Best Suited For?
Overall, Sir Hare shaving soap is good to great. It is a solid choice for any wet shaver who wants to try something new. At this price, it is great to just try something to mix up your routine.
Alternatively, if you are new to wet shaving and need a place to start, Sir Hare shaving soap is a good place to start. At this price, it is a low investment for a high quality soap.
Soon I am going to have to try some more of their products to see if this extends to more of their stuff.
