Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra Review – A Trim And Shave It All Duo
Not too long ago, I reviewed the Manscaped Lawn Mower 3.0 Plus and then the 4.0 Pro. Now it’s time to look at the latest version – the Manscaped Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra.
Manscaped’s trimmers may be small; however, after testing and reviewing a fair few body trimmers, I’ve found them to do a solid job from the neck down, especially around the groin and nuts area, where many trimmers struggle.
The main feature that sets the 5.0 Ultra apart from other Manscaped Lawn Mower trimmers is its dual-head system, which includes a trimmer blade and an additional foil shaver attachment head, allowing you to go down to skin level.
In this article, I’ll share my thoughts on the design and features of this trimmer, as well as my experiences with trimming and shaving various areas, from the chest and armpits to the crown jewels.
My Journey with Body Groomers & the Manscaped Difference
Let’s be honest – I’ve had my share of struggles with body groomers, especially when it comes to shaving around the balls. It’s an area prone to nicks, and many trimmers just don’t cut it (pun intended!). The Manscaped trimmers, in my experience, have been the best I’ve used for this delicate nut-smoothing task.
Am I saying they’re perfect? No, I don’t think any trimmer truly is. My personal “perfect” routine still involves trimming down the hair with a good trimmer and then finishing the scrotum off with a multi-blade razor.
However, I continue to test and review these devices because many people prefer a standalone trimmer and shaver or find razors irritating.
Even with my multi-blade preference, the Manscaped range has come remarkably close to making me say, “Wow, this is pretty good.”
Description & Features

When you unbox the 5.0 Ultra kit, you’ll find:
- Sturdy Travel Case: I quite like this – it’s a solid, fabric-covered case that protects the trimmer on the go. I also found it useful for keeping all the components in one place at home.
- Three Combs:
- Two adjustable combs: 2mm to 6mm, and 8mm to 12mm.
- An extra 1.4mm comb (a bonus compared to the 3.0 Plus and 4.0), perfect for a very short, close trim.
- Shaver Attachment: This attachment allows for closer shaving and features bidirectional operation with two trimmer blades on each side. My view and experience of it is mixed, which I go into more detail about further along in the review.
- USB-C Cord: A definite plus for me! I have plenty of these leads around the house, so if I lost or forgot the original, I’d easily have a spare.
- No Wall Plug/Adapter: Unlike the 4.0, this version doesn’t include a wall adapter. Not an issue for me as I have many, but worth noting.
- Detailed Manual: While a minor detail, I appreciate Manscaped’s comprehensive manual with clear pictures – a welcome change from the tiny, unreadable booklets many other brands provide.
The next video shows what we get in the box………….
No Nick/Cut Guarantee? They’re Honest About It
I actually appreciate Manscaped’s honesty when they state that their “SkinSafe™ technology does not provide skin cut protection.” It’s encouraging to see them be straightforward rather than making impossible claims about never getting a nick or cut. It sets realistic expectations.
Design, Build, and Ergonomics
The Manscaped trimmers are among the smallest I’ve used. Initially, I was skeptical they could handle larger areas like the chest, but they’ve proven effective.
Build Quality & Ergonomics Ratings
The “banana” like shape, tapering upwards, is excellent for navigating “nooks and crannies” – think groin or underarms. It really “scoops” into those areas nicely.
It feels solid in hand, so I give the build quality a thumbs up.
The matte finish on the lower section provides decent grip. However, I personally preferred the all-matte finish of the 3.0 Plus for an even grippier feel. The 4.0 and 5.0 Ultra do look a bit slicker with their shiny top section, though.
The next video clip shows the difference between the 3.0 Pro and 5.0 Ultra grip and finish.
Trimmer Blade, Guards, and Shaver Attachment
The trimmer blade is only approximately 34mm (1.33 inches) wide. While this is slim for a trimmer, I’ve found it ideal for smaller, intricate areas like the groin, pubic region, and balls.

Trimmer Blade & Combs Ratings
Despite its narrowness, it’s surprisingly efficient for larger areas too.
The blade section is easy enough to remove and attach. All you need to do is push on the top section with your thumb, pop the blade out, and when you’re ready to reattach it, just slide it back in and snap the top into place. You might find it tricky to attach at first; the trick is to seat the bottom end of the blade first, which has an additional plastic section that fits into the trimmer (then once that section is slid in, we just push the blade flat).
Although the blade has the ceramic section just like the 3.0 and 4.0, it is a slightly different blade. It is a few millimeters wider, and the bottom is metal, unlike the plastic bottom section found on the 3.0 and 4.0 models (see next photo below). When replacing the blade, we must purchase the one for the 5.0 Ultra.

We get two adjustable trimmer combs with the 5.0 Ultra. One gives us sizes 2, 4, and 6mm, and the other gives us sizes 8, 10, and 12mm. For me, that range works well, but I generally only use 3 or 4 mm and combless.
The additional 1.4 mm comb is super useful for doing a very short trim. Sometimes we might not want a skin-close shave that leaves a sandpaper-like, prickly stubble the next day, and this is when a close trim is more suitable (the 1.4 mm achieves this).
The combs are easy enough to slide on and off—we simply slide them on, choose the desired length, and then slide them off again when we’re done.
I find the combs can be clunky at times, particularly when switching between settings. This is where a good sliding comb attachment, like what we get on the Philips Bodygroom 7000 and others, has an advantage (the BodyGroom 7000, for example, just slides better and more easily).
I would like the trimmer combs to have a numbering slide system on them, so we can easily see which setting we’re using. However, we know it is on the lowest setting when it is close to the blade. Then, adjust the setting to 4 mm (e.g., 2mm – 6mm), and if necessary, slide it to 6mm.
The shaver attachment is exactly the same bidirectional shaver head as what we get on the Philips 3000, 5000, and 7000 Bodygroom models. It has a larger foil area than a standard foil shaver and also has two trimmer blades on both sides. The trimmer ends cut longer hairs before they reach the foil, but Manscaped advises against using this setting with growth over 5mm.
The cassette is easily removed, as shown in the next video clip.
LED Spotlight and Travel Lock
This is a feature I genuinely appreciate. Having a light on the front is incredibly helpful, especially when trimming sensitive areas like the balls.

The 5.0 Ultra’s light has two modes – a standard white light and a brighter one. I prefer the first, standard mode that activates upon switching it on.
My only minor gripe is that when using the shaver head, the light only shines forward. To compensate, I often use my phone’s torchlight for extra illumination during “down below” trims – it helps prevent nicks and cuts!
To activate the light, there’s a button below the main power button. Press it once for the first light mode, again for the brighter mode, and a third time to turn it off.
We also get a useful travel lock with the 5.0 Ultra. This is activated by pressing and holding the extra button located underneath the power button, which also activates the spotlight I mentioned. If we hold the button for another three seconds, we will activate the travel clock.

Constant RPMs
This is a feature I absolutely love and didn’t fully appreciate until using Manscaped trimmers. Regardless of the battery level, the trimmer maintains a constant motor speed.
This is crucial, especially for sensitive areas. With other trimmers, a slowing motor as the battery drains almost guarantees hair pulling – and that’s the last thing you want when trimming “down there.” This feature significantly reduces that risk.
Battery Life, Charging, and LED Indicators
The 700 mAh lithium battery is respectable for a trimmer of this size, offering around 60 minutes of run time. My usage confirms this estimate is pretty accurate. A full recharge takes just over an hour.

If you find yourself with a flat battery and need a quick touch-up, a 5-minute charge can give you a few good minutes of run time to finish off.
The Battery Indicator is a simple three-segment light indicator that is very useful. Fully lit means full charge; two segments indicate about 66% power remaining, and one segment means you’re down to 33% and should consider recharging soon.
It also has a wireless charging option. While I haven’t personally used it, the 5.0 Ultra does feature wireless charging capability. If you have a compatible wireless charging pad, you can simply place the trimmer on it to recharge.
Warranty
Only a 90-day warranty is offered, which feels underwhelming. A full 12-month warranty would be more reassuring.
Waterproof – Wet Trimming/Shaving
The trimmer has an IPX7 waterproof rating, meaning it can withstand submersion under a metre of water without damage. Of course, not many of us take our body groomers diving, but if we need to trim in the shower, it can be used.
I don’t use a trimmer in the shower and haven’t tried the Ultra 5.0, but if you need a trimmer for water use, this one should work for you.
Being waterproof means we can clean it easily with warm water after using it.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Cleaning is straightforward, which I do after every third trimming session:
- Pop off the trimmer blade.
- Rinse the blade under warm running water. I usually add a bit of antibacterial hand soap for additional cleanliness.
- For the shaver head, I also add a spot of antibacterial soap to the foil, run water over it, and turn the trimmer on for about 10 seconds before rinsing it thoroughly.
- The shaver head cassette can also be easily removed for a more thorough cleaning inside the head area, which I found is also best to do alongside what I mentioned in number 3.
- I always leave all components separated to dry for a while before reattaching the trimmer blade to the trimmer. I pat them dry lightly with a towel to speed up the drying process.
While Manscaped does not mention oiling the blade or the shaver attachment foil, I still add a couple of drops on the trimmer blade and foil. I add these drops only after wet cleaning the trimmer, after all components have dried.
Blade Replacement & Subscription
Manscaped recommends changing the trimmer blade every 3 to 6 months, depending on usage.
Manscaped states:
We recommend replacing your blade regularly to keep it sharp for maximum performance.
On average, we see that changing out your blade every 3–6 months helps maintain peak hygiene and performance. Of course, your replacement cycle will depend on your frequency of use and your specific grooming needs.
The shaver head also needs replacing, typically once every 12 months, adding another recurring cost to consider.
The video clip below shows the two options when purchasing from Manscaped.
Manscaping Experiences
Now, for the really important part – how it performs where it matters most.
Chest and Abdomen
Grooming my chest was simple and didn’t take long, even without the advantage of a wider trimmer head. It felt comfortable throughout and handled the job without any issues.
Chest & Abdomen Trimming Ratings
When I moved down to the abdomen, the softer hair compared to the chest and groin made trimming even easier and quicker.
I do own a trimmer with a wider blade that covers more ground in less time, but it doesn’t perform nearly as well in the more sensitive lower areas. At the end of the day, it’s a trade-off between speed and precision, as well as what parts of the body I wish to trim with one tool.
I trimmed my chest with a comb (4 mm setting) and without a comb. Both trimming methods worked fine and were effective.
Using the shaver attachment was adequate. It took some time to shave the whole area because I had to keep going over the same areas to get a close and even shave. I found that I still had some slightly stubble areas left after spending enough time on a grooming session.
The shaver head seemed to be best suited for frequent use, like every two days. This way, I could reduce the amount of time I spent grooming and get a closer, more even all-over finish.
Chest & Abdomen Shaving Ratings
My preference is a 3 – 5 mm chest trim without shaving (then I leave it to grow for about 3 weeks). However, I do all of the above, including closer trimming and shaving, for you guys and for review purposes.
Underarms
Since the armpit is a small area, trimming was quick and straightforward. The curved edges of the trimmer head proved really handy, making it easier to follow and kind of scoop hair from the contours and achieve an even trim.
Armpits Trimming Ratings
Using the shaver head caused me some irritation. However, this was the first time I had shaved the underarms in a while, and when I went back to shave a few days later, I did not get any irritation. The irritation may have been caused by the two trimmer blades on the sides of the shaver foil, scratching the skin.
Armpit Shaving Ratings
Although using the trimmer with a comb was mostly comfortable and quick, I still prefer to use the trimmer without a comb on my underarms and without the shaver. I just don’t need a skin-close shave on my pits!
Groin, Pubic Area, and Family Jewels
The trimmer’s compact blade and body made it easy to navigate the groin, especially in the awkward spots between the scrotum and leg. The pubic area was simple to handle with or without the 4mm comb.
Groin, Pubic Area, and Family Jewels Trimming Ratings
Using the trimmer without a comb on the family jewels worked very well, just like it did with the Manscaped 3.0 Plus and 4.0 Pro. However, it still requires patience and gently gliding the trimmer against the grain. You must take your time, glide the trimmer across the skin, and crucially, perform plenty of skin stretching to minimize nicks and cuts. It works well, and I get fewer nicks with this than with other trimmers, though I’m not always entirely nick-free.
Using the shaver head was okay, and I got fairly close shaves. The trimmer blades on each side of the foil can scratch the skin if I am not cautious enough. It takes a while to completely shave all the hair off my balls, but it gets there. However, I find it much easier to trim and then use a multi-blade razor to finish it off.
Groin, Pubic Area, and Family Jewels Shaving Ratings
The built-in spotlight was also a great addition, letting me see exactly what I was doing.
All in all, the size, design, and performance are very well suited for below-the-belt grooming.
Cost
Let’s talk price. The Manscaped 5.0 Ultra will set you back around $120 / £110 / €120. It’s certainly not a budget option. To put it in perspective:
- Manscaped 3.0 Plus: Around $70 (which I already felt was a bit pricey for what it offered).
- Manscaped 4.0: Around $90.
Value for Money Ratings
Considering the jump from the 4.0 to the 5.0 Ultra, the price difference isn’t massive. However, if you’re coming from the 3.0 Plus, that’s a significant $40 increase. The main question here is: do you need that shaver head? If not, you could save some money by opting for an earlier model, potentially even the 3.0 Plus.
When comparing the costs of the Ultra with other body groomer brand models, including Philips (Norelco), the Ultra is the top end. Even the Philips Bodygroom 7000 Series only costs around $70; however, the 5.0 Ultra has some advantages over the 7000 Series, particularly with below-the-belt grooming.
Final Thoughts – Verdict (Worth Buying?)
Overall, the Manscaped 5.0 Ultra is a good tool. I remain happy with it as a trimmer for the groin, pubic, and ball areas. It even handles chest trimming effectively, which is convenient if you’re already grooming “down below.”
My main reservation, similar to other electric body shavers like Philips, is with the shaver element. I’m just not keen on electric shaves that still leave noticeable stubble – I prefer the perfectly smooth finish of a multi-blade razor, plus getting the job done much quicker. However, this is a personal preference, and it only really applies to the crown jewels, as I trim everywhere else when not testing and reviewing products.
For others who experience irritation from manual razors or are perfectly content with an electric body shave, the 5.0 Ultra’s shaver is a very good option. Just be aware that it will likely leave some stubble areas.
Ultimately, Manscaped’s focus is on those sensitive areas, and for that purpose, these trimmers are ideal. I’m quite content using just the trimmer section for the balls to get an extremely close cut that doesn’t feel stubbly. If I want absolute smoothness, I’ll follow up with a Gillette Mach 3, Fusion 5, or similar razor.
If the shaver head isn’t a must-have for you, it’s worth comparing the Manscaped 3.0 Plus and 4.0. There are small differences in features and a notable price gap from the 3.0 Plus to the 5.0 Ultra.
Please feel free to leave a comment below if there’s anything I haven’t covered or if you have your own experiences with the Lawn Mower 5.0 Ultra to share.
