Jack Black Beard Oil Review – A Study in Bland
Not to be confused with the talented comedian, musician, and actor, Jack Black brings us a beard oil here that covers all the bases.
There is very little that truly stands out about it, to put it above several of the other options we’ve reviewed so far.
Is it better to be able to stand out away from the pack because of something good or something bad? Or is it better to just sort of blend into the pack?
Let’s find out!
Jack Black Beard Oil Description
We’ve looked at more than a few beard oils on Shaving Advisor, many of which stand out from the pack in one way or another. They either offer us a new scent or a special ingredient or are just so terrible they stick out in your mind immediately.
Jack Black Beard Oil doesn’t do much to stand out, though.
That isn’t a terrible thing. You can really go far by just making sure all your bases are covered.
Scent
With so many natural ingredients and nice little organic compounds, it is a surprise how artificial this beard oil smells.
You’d think there would be some kind of floral or sweet odor with a bit of a musk tone.
Instead, we have this semi-floral aroma that disappears almost as soon as you detect the scent.
In fact, more than anything it smells like that mass-produced soap you get in public restrooms.
It isn’t offensive, and it will disappear before too long. That way it won’t clash with any other products you are using.
Honestly, I’ve actually been adding some products to give myself a nice clean smell after using this one.
Ingredients
Jack Black Beard Oil is absolutely chock full of some really good ingredients for encouraging beard growth and making your bristles feel nice and soft to the touch.
Just to highlight a few ingredients:
––Kalahari Melon: The Seed oil of Kalahari Melon makes the skin tighter to avoid wrinkles and reduce and reduce swelling from irritation.
—Plum Oil: Plum oil reduces irritation from dry and scaly skin, and also keeps it moist and supple.
—Marula Oil: Marula Oil is from an African Fruit tree. The oil of the fruit keeps your skin nice and moist as well as reducing stretch marks and age spots.
––Vitamin E: One of the best vitamins for skin care. It reduces swelling and irritation from environmental sources.
––Brown Algae: Brown Algae oil actually helps to introduce Oxygen back to the skin cells in your face to promote healthy skin growth.
—Carrot Extract: Like Brown Algae, Carrot Extract promotes healthy skin by keeping it hydrated and promoting healing.
What does all this mean? It means that this is great for your skin! It’s going to definitely help with your skin as you are growing your beard.
User Experience
Like many of our other reviews, I used this product every other day as a part of my beard care routine.
After cleaning my beard hair with some beard wash and making sure to give it a nice trim, I work three drops of the oil into the bristles of my beard and down to the skin underneath.
I used this every other day for a period of several weeks to get the full effect.
How is the Texture?
While it is certainly not the heaviest oil I have used on my beard, Jack Black Beard Oil is on the thicker side. It feels less like a natural oil, though, and more like a type of silicone oil. It is hefty and certainly feels thicker than most.
It doesn’t come off easily and takes some elbow grease to remove the oil from your skin. That’s really great when it comes to your face, but that isn’t great when it comes to cleaning it off your hands afterward.
Overall, you can really feel this oil even hours after applying it and that is a no bueno for me. I don’t like that feeling at all.
How Easy is it to Use?
This is actually one of the easiest oils I have ever gotten a chance to use. As mentioned, you only need to put about 3 drops on your hand before massaging it into the beard.
That doesn’t actually come from the oil itself, and more from the bottle! Rather than using the eyedropper method or the small plastic hole that you get with some aftershaves, it uses a pump, much like shower soaps or shampoo.
The pump also locks into place, which makes it great for traveling. Honestly, I might want to empty this bottle and use it for some of my other beard oils.
Value for Money
Finally, we find a place where Jack Black Beard Oil really stands out! Unfortunately, it isn’t in a positive way.
As of the time of the writing of this article, Jack Black is selling this 1 fl oz bottle for $28 USD on Amazon on their personal website.
That’s seriously outrageous. There is no reason to get a beard oil that costs that much money! Especially not when you can get something like Cremo Palo Santo Beard Oil or King C Gillette Beard Oil for a great deal less.
Those guys smell better and feel better and cost so much less.
Not sure why someone would want to spend this much money on a beard oil that won’t also immediately grow the beard overnight.
Common Consumer Complaints, Issues, and Positive Reviews
Taking time to look at these reviews does show some mixed opinions on this product. It seems that the more people are willing to be positive about the product, there are more than a few naysayers out there.
Positive Reviews
Many consumers are definitely fans of the thick nature of the oil. They like how it feels on their skin, and how rich it feels while working it into their beards. It seems like a great deal of those who like the texture are those with longer beards, which makes sense as the sticky texture is good for holding moisture into your beard hair and skin.
Some also love the light and non-clashing nature of the scent. I suppose for my own part, I love complex and multi-faceted scents in my products. Others prefer something uncomplicated and clean. If that is the case, this beard oil is definitely for you.
Others actually like how fast-acting this beard oil is, and I will have to give them that. This beard oil makes your face feel much softer and more supple after even a few days of using it. Some beard oils take time to kick in, while this feels great immediately.
Consumer Complaints
Price Price Price! I’m not the only one who doesn’t like the price of Jack Black Beard Oil. Heck, even the five-star reviews comment that the price is a major factor. Most of those who rave about it say things like “Worth the price” which tells you immediately that even the price weighs on them. With some many other good beard oils on the market, how can you justify it?
Ironically enough, the points I made above about the positive reviews are also things people complain about. I’m not the only one who enjoys more complex scents in their berard products, and others seem to agree with me. Also, there are those who really dislike the sticky texture, saying it is more like a dense soap.
Others also complain about the oily residue the beard oil leaves behind. While that may sound redundant, like I said above, you can really feel this oil for hours, even after wearing it for a long time. People with sensitive skin or who feel overstimulated easily will not be fans of this beard oil. They will probably want something lighter and less sticky.
Final Thoughts – Who is Jack Black Beard Oil Really For?
So, this is a hard question to really answer. Honestly, I don’t like this beard oil overall. It is hard to recommend it to anyone. If it was less expensive, I would probably say it was worth a try for someone with a thicker beard or someone who is attempting to promote more beard growth from a wispy or patchy beard.
Maybe if you are a real Jack Black fan already? But then again, why would you listen to me at that point?
If you really REALLY want to try it, then I guess give it a shot. Otherwise, just don’t bother. There are better options for cheaper. Heck, there are worse options for cheaper, and at least then you could talk about something entertaining.
