Philips Body Groomer 3000 Series (BG34** Models) Review: New Generation – An Improvement Or Not?

The Philips Body Groomer 3000 Series has undergone a major redesign. If you are familiar with the older 3000 series (the models starting with BG30), you will immediately notice that the new BG34 generation looks entirely different.

The older models were actually named Philips Bodygroom 3000 Series, which I reviewed some time ago, along with all the other Philips (add Norleco if you’re from the US) body groomers.

Philips is leaning heavily into the manscaping market now, even explicitly printing “For Body and Balls” right on the front of the box. I do like a bit of straightforwardness like that!

This is a trim and shave dedicated manscaping device and not just a trimmer.

While it performs decently well for the price, this update brings a mix of improvements and new flaws that actually make me prefer the older model in certain aspects. In this review, I’m sharing my experience after testing it across my chest, underarms, abdomen, and—yes—the family jewels.

USA Availability: It is important to note a regional quirk regarding availability: as of early 2026, the 3000 series BG34 models are widely distributed across the UK and Europe, but they are not yet officially launched in the USA market, where Philips (Norelco) continues to heavily push its mid-tier 5000 and 7000 series.

The 3000 Series is designed to trim and shave from the neck down, including the more personal areas like the groin, pubic, and scrotum area.

The specific model I bought and tested for this review is the Philips BG3480/15. Any BG34 model is the same groomer. They will just differ based on accessories, countries they are sold in, and maybe other small factors, but the body groomer will be the exact same performance-wise.

Philips Body Groomer 3000 Series unboxed

Inside the box of this particular bundle, I got:

  • The BG34 Body Groomer
  • Two Translucent Trimming Combs: 2mm and 3mm sizes.
  • USB-A Charging Cord: Plugs directly into common extension leads or wall adapters.
  • Small Cleaning Brush
  • Mini User Manual

A quick mention on bundles: The version I purchased only comes with the 2mm and 3mm combs and no travel pouch. However, other models can come with a third 5mm guard and a fabric travel pouch. Pay close attention to the specific model suffix (that represents accessories included) before checking out (i.e., the number changes after BG34).

Design, Build Quality & Ergonomics

The very first thing I felt when picking up the BG34 is just how lightweight it is.

On one hand, a lightweight device is great for preventing wrist fatigue if we are doing full-body manscaping sessions covering the chest, stomach, and legs all at once.

On the other hand, it looks and feels plasticky, kind of cheap.

Personally, I prefer a grooming tool with a bit of heft—something that shouts “heavy-duty durability,” and the BG34 misses that mark. However, being light for longer trimming sessions makes sense; it is practical!

Looking closely at the handle, the back features a series of raised lines designed to provide grip. While it functions well enough to keep the trimmer from slipping, I am disappointed that Philips didn’t use proper rubberized grip panels. Since this tool is fully waterproof, a wet, soapy hand in the shower needs rubber, not textured plastic, and a rubberized section just always provides me with a firmer hold on a body groomer.

The overall shape and design have changed significantly from the previous generation. The top neck of the handle still curves inward, which I find useful for using in what I would call a scooping method for under the arms and around the groin area.

However, while the neck of the handle still curves, I really like how the older style has the slimline head, and it made that style unique compared with other body groomers (see next video clip).

The power button on the front of the trimmer is slightly recessed, which should help prevent switching it on accidentally when it is in use. However, I did notice I have switched it off accidentally a few times while using it, but it is no drama–worth noting though.

Trimmer & Shaver Heads

The cutting system uses a static, non-flexing cassette featuring a central micro-foil with top and bottom integrated trimmer elements. This layout is bidirectional. Whether we push the groomer upward or pull it downward, the outer blades crop down long hairs so that the center foil can immediately follow behind to shave the remaining stubble.

This bidirectional shaver and trimmer cassette design is pretty much standard among other body groomers like the Braun Series 7, Manscaped Ultra 5.0, and all the Philips (Norelco) models.

Interestingly, there is a release button on the back spine of the handle that lets us detach the entire upper cassette and head. On this base-tier 3000 model, this feature serves no practical purpose because we dont get any alternative heads. Philips clearly designed a single, standardized modular handle blueprint across their entire latest body groomers (i.e., 3000, 5000 and 7000 Series). On the upgraded 7000 models, this button allows users to swap out the shaver cassette with a trimmer attachment. For the 3000 series, it’s just a cosmetic artifact of mass production, but maybe at some point the trimmer and other heads will be available and sold separately (maybe).

I found the foil cassette inside the shaver head can be removed easily (see next video clip) by prising it off with part of the thumb and thumbnail, and it slots back in very easily.

Combs

The transparent plastic guards included in my kit are fixed at 2 mm and 3 mm. I did not get a 5 mm, which I like to have for trimming the pubic area. While my BG3480/15 did not come with a 5 mm comb, other model number kits do, like the BG3485/15.

I found the combs click onto the head and cassette section smoothly and clip into place securely—and they are also easy to detach from the groomer head. The attaching and detaching is a minor upgrade over the somewhat fussy, high-pressure attachment style of the old BG30 guards. The combs have obtained an annoying flaw, though: sharpness.

The outer guide teeth on these clear combs are noticeably pointy and sharp. If I don’t maintain a perfectly flat, parallel angle against your skin, the edges can scratch and dig into my skin. I did have to step back and be quite cautious with your sweeping technique to keep things comfortable. By comparison, the older model’s combs had much softer, rounded guiding tines.

Furthermore, the size numbers molded into the clear plastic are practically invisible. Even with my reading glasses on, trying to differentiate the 2mm from the 3mm guard under bathroom lighting is a massive chore. A dark, contrasting paint fill on the numbers would have gone a long way.

Note: While the combs that came with my kit are clear plastic, I am guessing others might get the very light blue type. These light blue types might not present the same sharp edges and lack of seeing the numbers issues I have had. I’m not sure if my type was a temporary type created as I bought all three of the body groomer models as soon as they were available.

Missing Features

There are three prominent features that I found missing which matter to me (and might to you) on the Philips 3000 that hold it back from competing with premium tools:

1) No Integrated LED Spotlight: Brands like Manscaped (see next video clip) and even the Braun Series 7 include a bright “SmartLight” on the head. When we are maneuvering down in the shadow-heavy terrain below the belt, having an onboard light is a massive safety asset. The BG34 leaves us entirely blind unless our bathroom overhead lighting is ideal, or, as I have to do, I use the torch on my mobile phone.

2) No Specialized Skin Protection Shield: Unlike the Braun Series 7, which offers a dedicated protective plastic shield that snaps safely over the side trimmers’ teeth to isolate the foil and protect us from the trimmer blades (see next video clip), the Philips leaves its bi-directional trimmers completely exposed at all times.

3) No Travel Lock: Having no travel lock would be much of an issue if it wasn’t for me noticing that I have accidentally switched off the groomer while it was in use, due to that only slightly recessed power button. I can see that power button getting activated accidentally in transit, quite easily. You can see me activating the travel lock in with the Braun Body Groomer in teh next clip.

4) Trimmer Attachment: While the two trimmer blades on the cassette work very well when shaving for catching stray hairs, I do prefer to be able to swap heads with a wider, more dedicated trimmer like what I have on the Braun BG7 and Manscaped Ultra 5.0. I found the combs used for trimming with the cassette attached are not as effective as a separate trimmer with combs attached. In the next clip, I show switching over the trimmer for the shaver heads very quickly.

All three of these can be overlooked if they are not that important to you, but for me, having that Spotlight plus the Skin Protection Shield pushes me towards preferring the Braun.

Battery Life, Charging, and LED Indicators

On the battery front, the BG34 delivers a mixed bag. We get a completely standard 80 minutes of runtime on a single charge, which is more than enough to handle multiple full-body sessions without stressing over a dead motor. Without clock watching, I reckon I got well over 60 minutes before I re-charged it, and the battery was not completely flat.

The LEDs are simple: a single LED indicator light blinks when the battery has 5 minutes of runtime left, flashes slowly while plugged in, and glows solid once fully charged.

None of the body groomers I have used and reviewed yet provide a percentage charge left display, which I would like to see and find very useful. It is good to be in the know when doing a longer grooming session.

Philips swapped out their old proprietary wall chargers for a standard USB-A cable. It still has the proprietary cable end that connects to the groomer, and it is not Type-C, but I found having the USB-A option practical as I can connect with any of the number of adapters and extension leads I have in the home. We dont get an adapter with the kit, which does not matter for me as I have plenty. Any of our adapters that are 5V/1A or 5V/2A are suitable.

The battery takes a staggering 8 hours to achieve a full charge. I guess it is best for us to make sure we have it fully charged if we are planning on doing a longer grooming session.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Maintenance and cleaning up the device is extremely simple. As it is fully waterproof, we can also wet clean.

For regular maintenance, I typically:

  1. Remove the cassette (but dont brush the foil on this as it can damage it).
  2. Blow out loose hair where the cassette sat in the head section.
  3. Brush away remaining debris.
  4. Pop the cassette back on.

After every second use or so (or after every longer grooming session), I also perform a wet clean as follows:

  1. Apply two drops of liquid antibacterial hand soap (optional) directly onto the outer foil.
  2. Splash a bit of warm water over the foil
  3. Turn the motor on, and let it run for about 10 to 15 seconds to create a deep soap lather inside the cassette.
  4. Rinse it thoroughly under the tap to flush out all suds, shake off the excess water, and gently dab it dry with a clean tissue
  5. Leave the cassette detached on the counter for a few hours to air dry completely.

Philips recommends wet cleaning after every use. I can see why, as the cassette is a closed unit, so we are unable to clean it without wet cleaning.

Oiling Advice: Philips claims they never require lubrication. Personally, I regularly apply a couple of drops or so of lightweight clipper oil to the outer trimmers and center foil after every wet clean, letting the machine run for 10 seconds before gently dabbing away the excess oil with a tissue. I just believe metal moving parts require lubrication to help maintain them and make them run better in use.

Replacement Cassette: Philips recommends replacing the cassette (part number – BG2010) every 12 months. Mileage will vary!

Warranty

Philips offers a 2-year warranty, which can also be extended when registering the groomer with them for up to a generous 5 years. That beats the Manscaped underwhelming 90-day warranty and matches what Braun offers.

Noise Level

Yes, it is a pretty loud device and kind of sounds rattly. You aren’t going to be able to sneak into the bathroom for a quick midnight trim without someone from the household wondering what the heck you are doing.

Waterproof – Wet Trimming/Shaving

Philips documentation or website specs don’t provide any waterproof rating. However, it is fully waterproof.

I don’t use a trimmer or shaver in the shower and haven’t tried the 3000 Series, but if you need a trimmer for water use, this is suitable.

Being waterproof means we can clean it easily with warm water after using it, which I covered in a previous section of this review.

Body Grooming Experiences

To give this groomer a fair test, I used it a number of times on my more private areas, and trimmed plus shaved my chest, underarms, and abdomen.

Chest & Abdomen Performance

Starting with a dense layer of chest hair, I snapped on the 3mm guide comb. The key to getting an efficient cut with this redesigned tool head is adopting a steady, continuous back-and-forth sweeping motion while keeping the face of the head flat against the skin. If you try to rake it along at a steep angle, those sharp comb tips might scratch you as they did with me.

Trimming the chest with a comb was quick enough to complete, and the overall trim was even. I was satisfied.

Shaving the chest was fine, and the outer trimmers picked up on missed and longer hairs. I got a decent close shave, although some areas still had slight stubble left (no different than other body groomers with a shaver element). The shave and even the side trimmers were also quite comfortable.

If I spent more time going over the same areas, I probably could remove most of the slight stubble leftovers, but I would rather accept the imperfections.

The abdomen area hair is so short and soft and easy to shave that it is not really worth a mention. However, suffice to say, the 3000 Series trimmed and shaved this area easily.

Underarms Performance

The armpits proved to be a mixed experience. When I attempted to use the 3mm comb attachment inside the deep, hollow contours of the underarm, the tool struggled significantly. The combination of the curved handle angle and the wide plastic comb frame made it difficult to feed the hair properly into the cutters. I found myself repeatedly scraping against the skin to grab missed hairs, which quickly became uncomfortable and irritating.

However, the experience completely transformed once I took the comb off. Running the bare bidirectional head across the underarms allowed the exposed outer trimmer teeth to easily hook those awkward, multi-directional armpit hairs that the comb missed. It cleaned up the area efficiently; however, the red rash and irritation I got after was extreme (I got it last time with the Braun BG7 too).

The shaving aspect is what caused most of the irritation. This is my subjective experience, which you may not find so challenging.

The underarm irritation was so bad for a couple of days that I have decided not to test and use a body groomer shaver on them again. My underarms prefer a trimmer without a comb attached.

The underarms were kind of a complete failure–not restricted to only the 3000 Series, though.

The Intimate Area: Results Down Below

Now for the most critical test—the groin, pubic area, and the family jewels. For obvious reasons, I can’t provide any video footage of this process, but I can give you my completely honest, unfiltered feedback after using it multiple times below the belt.

The good thing about below the belt is I can trim and shave here every couple of days. In fact, to enable a body groomer like this to shave the balls without nicks and with ease, I have found shaving every 2 or 3 days for a few minutes each time works great.

For the main pubic area, my personal stylistic preference is to keep the hair short rather than completely bald. I used the 3mm guard (though I would have preferred a 5mm if my kit included it). It neatly cropped the hair down, but when I tried to use the bare foil to completely shave the margins of the pubic area, I noticed it consistently left a few stray, ultra-short hairs behind. I had to repeatedly pass over the same patch of skin to catch them.

When moving onto the delicate, wrinkled skin of the scrotum itself, the performance was impressive. Despite my initial caution, the rounded tips on the trimmer teeth worked beautifully. I did not experience a single nick, cut, skin snag, or painful hair pull on the crown jewels. I have shaved this area with the 3000 Series numerous times without an issue. I am not sure if I have just gotten good at trimming and shaving with a body groomer on this area or whether the groomers I am using are better, as I get a great trim and shave down there now.

The curved, scooping neck design makes it incredibly easy to navigate the tight channels between my inner thighs and the scrotum. However, this is where my preference for the older model comes into play. The old BG30 model featured a completely flush, open-sided head design with zero plastic borders on the flanks. This new BG34 head has wider plastic shoulders and structural walls on the sides. While it’s highly secure, I felt the older, slimmer head profile was just a bit more nimble at squeezing into the tightest, most intricate nooks and crannies down below.

Cost – Value for Money

I am going to go with UK prices as the 3000 Series is not available in the US. In the UK, it costs around £45, which is very affordable and cheaper than some others.

The replacement cassette costs around £15 (replaced every 12 months approx.) and is also very affordable.

I would keep this in mind with pricing, though. Philips is always swapping around prices on device or model ranges, and you might find something like a 5000 Series is costing the same one week on Amazon as the 3000 – or even the 7000 Series becomes not too much more.

Final Thoughts – Verdict (Who’s It For?)

The Philips Body Groomer Series 3000 (BG34) is a highly capable, respectable body groomer that won’t break the bank.

It does lack the additional trimmer attachment head, which proved to be important to me for the underarms. If that is the case for you too, then you might want to take a look at the 7000 Series, Braun Body Groomer Series 7 (BG7), or Manscaped Ultra 5.0.

If you are upgrading from an old hair clipper or a cheap generic trimmer, the absolute skin safety on the scrotum alone makes this a fantastic buy. Just keep in mind that you have to contend with an 8-hour charge time, a slightly cheap plastic casing feeling, and sharp comb edges that require a careful hand (keep in mind, though, that the sharp edges might have just been my clear plastic types, which you might not get with your purchase).

I would not upgrade this from the older 3000 Series. There is nothing that shouts out improvements apart from easier-to-attach combs, but it lost its practical and unique, ergonomically friendly design.

If you are still on the fence or want to see how this model matches up against alternatives, check out the main roundup guide on my website: Best Body Groomers for Men – Shaving Advisor. I constantly update that list with my latest hands-on testing results to help you find the absolute best tool for your budget and needs.

Pro Tip for Beginners: If this is your very first time taking an electric trimmer down below the belt, take your time. Always start out using the protective guide combs to get a feel for the motor’s vibration, stretch the skin completely flat with your free hand, and go slowly. Find your technique first, and you will be able to navigate your routine successfully without any bloody bathroom disasters!
