Mühle Hexagon Razor Review – A Mild Contemporary Shave

It’s been a while since we have had a Mühle safety razor up for review, and an interesting-looking shaving tool from Mühle I wanted to try was the Mühle Hexagon.

Hexagon is a series of shaving supplies made by the German company Mühle. The series includes shaving brushes and bowls, all with a hexagon shape, and not only safety razors. Mühle is quite modern in its approach and produces contemporary razors that can be part of a shaving kit (i.e., series).

The last Mühle razors I used and reviewed were the Mühle R89, Rocca, and R41, which are all very different razors.

The Hexagon razor shares the same head as the Mühle R89 (both are mild in aggressiveness). The difference is the handle.

Let’s take a look at the all-important features, how it shaves on various beard and stubble lengths, and finally, recommend who the Mühle Hexagon is best suited for.

Description & Features

The Mühle Hexagon has quite an unusual design. Mühle does tend to design razors based on new, modern, and unique designs, though.

The successful Berlin designer Mark Braun designed the Hexagon feature and design within the series.

  • Materials and Finish – The head is made from brass with a chrome finish, and the handle is made from aluminum (matt metallic anodized).
  • Double-edged – Both sides of the blade head can be used on this razor and alternated while shaving. The blade inserted has two edges.
  • Closed-comb – The razor is a closed comb, which means it has a safety bar on the bottom section of the head. The bottom bar has a scalloped design, which improves contact between the blade and hair.
  • Three-parts – The razor comes apart when the handle is unscrewed, which removes the head. The head then has two pieces to insert a blade in between.
  • Blade replacement – Inserting a blade between the top cap and safety bar is trickier than inserting a blade in a two-part or butterfly razor. It’s in no way difficult, though!
  • Handle – The Hexagon shaped handle is a long type safety razor handle that does not have the typical knurled or engraved design. It has engraving, including Mühle lettering, but these do not promote grip.
  • Aggressiveness – The aggressiveness of this razor leans heavily toward the mild side. The blade gap between the bottom safety bar to the blade is approximately 0.76mm.
  • Size & weight –  102mm (4in) in length. Weight 67g (2.36oz). It’s light and long when compared with other safety razors.

The Mühle Hexagon Razor is available in Forest Green, Matte Metallic Silver, Black Graphite, and a Pink-colored Sunrise model. The razor used in this review is the Forest Green model. They are all the same and just a different color.

The Hexagon Series Sets

Within each Mühle series, the company includes various handle types or colors and a shaving brush that matches. They create sets of razors and brushes with a classy chrome stand.

Muhle Hexagon Shaving Set

The shaving sets provide the option of choosing a Silvertip Badger or Silvertip Fibre (See Mühle Silvertip Fibre Shaving Brush Review) shaving brush.

Now, these sets are quite pricey and cost around $172 – $190 USD (£157 – £182 or €169 – €189.

They are great-looking sets, and the shaving brush knots are high quality.

Handle and Grip

The handle of this razor does not offer as much grip as other handle types that are either engraved or have some type of knurling. However, the finish on the handle is matte, which makes it kind of non-slip.

The hexagon shape does support a user holding the razor plenty enough. It is not slippy in any way.

The longer than average length is something some gents prefer while others do not. Of course, guys with larger hands or those who just prefer a longer handle will like the size.

Weight and Balance

I found the Mühle Hexagon was a bit top-heavy. The handle is made from aluminum, making it light and the head heavy.

It only weighs 67 grams (2.36oz), which is lighter than the average safety razor. I prefer a heavier razor; however, I got great shaves from the razor.

I would like to see an extra 20 – 30 grams added to the razor weight.

Look & Design

The look of this razor is quite unique, and at a guess, I think any buyer looking at the handle in pictures would know if they like the appearance or not.

I bought the Forest Green model, which looks good, and the brand name engraved stands out. I now like the look of the black and silver handles.

As I have mentioned above, the traditional wet shaving products made by Mühle are meant to have an attractive modern appearance. Therefore, some gentlemen might be happy to part with extra functionality like handle grip for modern attractiveness.

Mine looks much better live than in pictures. It looked odd in photos, and now I like it. The color and design have grown on me.

Blade Overhang

There is a little blade overhang, but nothing significant that can affect shaving.

Shaving Experience

I had a good idea of how this razor would shave because the R89 mild razor I shaved with previously had the same razor head.

I wasn’t sure what to think about the hexagon handle and if I would like it. I got this razor primarily for reviewing; otherwise, I would not have chosen this razor style.

I used the razor over with some heavy 3-day growth, 2 days of growth, and as a daily shave tool.

3+ Days of Growth

On the first occasion I shaved with the Mühle Hexagon I had a good three days worth of whickers to clear up. It’s not the ideal sort of growth to tackle with a mild razor, but it’s always fun to test.

As I knew the razor head, I could start straight off with a sharp Feather razor blade.

While the razor did require three passes and a good bit of clearing up, it did a great job. After the first pass, the razor became a very comfortable shaving tool.

There was no irritation during or after the first use of this razor. The last new razor I started on was the Merkur 41C Open Comb, and I had to wrestle with some irritation on the first shave with that razor, but nothing at all – zero – with the Mühle Hexagon.

Daily and Every 2 Days

After two days of growth ‘as expected,’ I got a very comfortable shave. This razor is much easier to use with two days worth of growth than with three or more days.

I’m not a daily shaving person, as I like to avoid skin irritations, and I prefer the feeling after cutting off a couple or more days of stubble. However, as I haven’t used a mild closed comb razor for quite some time, I really noticed the benefit of the mildness and efficiency of this razor, as well as the lack of irritation.

Blades

When getting started with a new safety razor, it is usually best to use a mild blade. This prevents nicks, cuts, and irritation before getting familiar with the razor.

I knew this razor was mild, and using a Feather on the first was the right choice. If I were unsure, though, I would have gone with a milder Astra, Derby, or my reliable Personna blades.

If you start mild with the blade and then up the sharpness level with certain brands afterward, it’s an excellent method to follow.

Shaving Under the Nose and Chin Area

Manouravilty over the chin area is not as good as other razors with a smaller handle. This is one of the negatives of a longer and thicker handle.

Under the nose, it took a little effort to clear up, but the razor cleared it up nicely after paying attention to shaving in that area.

Overall Shaving Experience

I was pleasantly surprised. The Mühle Hexagon Razor took me back to my earlier traditional wet shaving days with mild razors.

This razor showed me how my shaving technique has improved over time. Five years ago, I could not have had such an excellent close shave as I did with this type of razor.

I expected to dislike the hexagon handle and the longer-than-average length, but I did not notice any negatives apart from the reduction in maneuverability. The long handle is positive for longer shaving strokes, so there are pros and cons when considering handle lengths.

Value for Money

The Mühle Hexagon Razor costs around $62 USD (£48 – €59.00), which is not a bad price for the quality of razor a person gets.

Of course, you can get much cheaper razors, and as a comparison, the Muhle R89 costs around $44.00.

Final Thoughts – Who Is It Best Suited For?

I was pleasantly surprised with the Mühle Hexagon in terms of how it shaved and its appearance. It’s mild but very efficient.

Buyers are going to need to like the contemporary design, which is not to everyone’s taste. Choosing the right color will be important, too.

As this razor is mild, anyone from those new to wet shaving (See Best Beginner Safety Razors) with safety razors and veterans that prefer mild razors could easily enjoy a shave with the Hexagon and like the modern design hanging on a razor and brush stand in the bathroom.

Gentlemen who prefer a slightly longer handle than a standard one will like this feature.

See you on the next lather up and shave down!
