WEISHI Nostalgic Long Handle Safety Razor Review – Budget Friendly

WEISHI Nostalgic Long Handle Butterfly Open Double Edge Safety Razor on its box

Picking up a decent razor within the budget-friendly zone was much trickier than I initially thought it would be. It’s so much easier to choose from high-quality brands and models.

However, for those new to wet shaving with a safety razor and/or guys needing to purchase a budget-friendly, the WEISHI Nostalgic Long Handle came in best within its price range. If you are new to wet shaving then you might want to take a look at the best beginners safety razors roundup!

WEISHI is a Chinese brand that does not have its own store that’s on or offline, with all its company information kept on Amazon like many other Chinese companies. They have been manufacturing budget-friendly safety razors since 1993.

Update: This review was completed in the early days of ShavingAdvisor when at first it seemed wise to review products many were buying on Amazon. However, once I learned about how these Chinese products and copies were flooding online stores like Amazon and Walmart (among other stores worldwide) and the effect this had on honest hard working companies and businesses, I decided not to support these products.

Let’s look closer at the WEISHI Nostalgic safety razor and tell you how it fairs.

Description & Features

  • Double edged – You can shave with this razor on both sides and use double-edged razors in the head. DE razors are the most commonly used.
  • Closed comb – The bottom section of the razor head has a straight edge with no teeth or gaps, which is safer and easier to use than open combs (these have sort of teeth-like combs). It may not be best for those with dense and thick growth.
  • Butterfly head – The WEISHI is a single-piece unit, and unlike the two and three-piece safety razors, they are very easy to open for razor replacement. The main negative is that these are more difficult to clean up, although the opening mechanism could also become faulty after prolonged use.
  • Materials and Finish – The razor is made from brass and has a gun metal chrome finish. It looks attractive enough, although the chrome will wear after some time.
  • Handle – The handle has plenty of grip, ideal for those new to shaving with safety razors. There ain’t no slipping happening with this handle. This is the long handle type which is great on the longer strokes; however, I find shorter handles better for shaving under the nose, chin, and Adam’s apple area.
  • Size and Weight – The total length is 110 mm which is common for long handle types. It weighs in at 76g that’s quite light for a long-handled razor. More weight generally helps guide the razor to do the work.

How well does the WEISHI perform and shave, then?

When I first started wet shaving with a safety razor, I used brands and models that were more expensive than the WEISHI, like the Edwin Jagger DE89 and Merkur 34c, and fortunately never got to try out any budget types.

I’m glad I never, as I don’t think I would have been still using safety razors today.

The few I did try, primarily to use for reviewing on ShavingAdvisor, were extremely poor regarding shaving experience and closeness (I won’t even add them to this website).

Unfortunately, the WEISHI Nostalgic was the only one worth reviewing and giving any credit to that was priced at around $20 or less. I hope I can find a couple of really good budget razors in the near future to recommend, though!

So, off to shave we go!

I guess I would say it’s not a bad razor for the price, but nowhere near as good as what I use and prefer.

shaving with the WEISHI Nostalgic safety razor

It does give a mild shave, but it was not close enough, even after 3 passes (lathered up 3 times). It is beginner friendly in a way because of its mildness.

I kind of think this would make a decent budget razor for women shaving their legs.

Handle & Grip – 8/10

The handle is very functional and gives a person substantial grip while shaving. The long handle may be beneficial with the cheek and neck strokes; however, it’s not so advantageous with tricky bits under the nose, etc. (you usually get the best of one or the other when it comes to length).

Look & Design – 7/10

It has a nice appearance – If you like a chrome gun metal look, and the butterfly opening is a preference for some guys. TTO (turn to open) razors are not quite as popular as two or three piece razors.

Weight and Balance – 7/10

I prefer a razor that is slightly heavier and I did not get the balance feeling of the head of the razor leaning towards the face that I get from razors I prefer to use. I would not say it was poor, though.

Ease of Use – 7/10

For me, it was easy to use in general, although I did struggle with shaving my neck as I required too many strokes to remove all the stubble. I have tricky growth patterns on my neck, and I wasn’t getting any kindness from the WEISHI Nostalgic, although it might be the over mildness that caused me issues, and I was still left with some stubble.

Value for Money – 6/10

Although this razor is budget friendly, I would rather add another $20 or so to buy a higher-quality model from the top brands. However, many people giving consumer reviews on Amazon are really happy with the cost and quality (how many are real reviews, though?).

Final Thoughts – and who is the WEISHI Nostalgic best suited for?

As mentioned – out of all the budget-friendly safety razors I tested out, the WEISHI Nostalgic performed best overall. I ain’t saying this is a great razor, but rather adequate for many, and some reviewers reckon it is great (questionable).

Those new to wet shaving with safety razors might find this fine until they decide to continue using safety razors and invest in a better-quality model.

I reckon this could be a decent choice for women shaving their legs but there are better options

Overall, I have tested worse and use much better, but mine will go into recycling!
