For those of you who are looking for something to cure the itchy blues you get when you are growing out your beard, we have OneDTQ’s Medicine Man Beard Wash.
OneDTQ is a company based in Brooklyn, New York. It is run by a husband and wife duo who noticed the issue with itchy and dandruff-ridden beards and set out to correct the issue using only the best ingredients.

Description and Features
First off, one of the things I love about this bottle is the pump top. It is very easy to use one-handed. This is great for use in the shower or at the sink and makes it easy to get it on your washcloth without having to fumble around.
Secondly, the pump locks with a twist, so you aren’t going to accidentally spray bead wash all over the place. This is more a problem with this beard wash than with any others (see the Texture section below).
The plastic bottle is also great for traveling. The plastic bottle won’t shatter with rough handling. The only thing that really could go wrong is that it might burst because of air pressure while in your checked luggage, but that is a really rare case.
I always give extra points to a beard product that is safe to travel with. Even if you don’t travel all that much, it is good to know the maker is thinking ahead in those kinds of cases.
Scent
The aroma of this beard wash is an acquired taste.
When I opened it up and checked the aroma, I was hit with an overwhelmingly medicinal scent. It smelled like a prescription shampoo for dandruff or dry scalp.
I suppose that would make the most sense considering it is an anti-itching beard wash called Medicine Man.
It was when I got it under hot water and lathered up that the whole scent profile changed, like a blooming flower.
The lather mixed in with the hot water developed this Arid Dusty Air-like scent. Juniper and Pine mixed with a heavy musk aroma. I was back in the rocky limestone hills around Lake Meridian in Texas. I could smell the dust and the clean air.
There is also a slight note of lavender and citrus, combined with all the other options honestly makes me want a frozen margarita.
It made me want to use this soap more and more. It was a true comfort smell for me.
Ingredients
This beard wash is what I like to see in any kind of cosmetic, not just beard care.
The list is not complicated, and everything is labeled with both its regular and scientific name. You can pick out all the ingredients and know exactly what they are.
The only thing that would throw a red flag to anyone just skimming through the list would be Potassium Hydroxide, which is a normal cleanser used in all kinds of soaps and shampoos. Very little to worry about there.
There are a few ingredients I would like to highlight as great things to include in your beard wash.
- Hemp Oil – Specifically a natural ingredient that untangles hair and relieves itch.
- Jojoba Oil – I’ve talked about the skin care wonder ingredient Jojoba before. It is loaded with antioxidants and vitamins to make your hair less brittle.
- Sea Fennel Extract – Sea Fennel has something referred to as Peptides, which are used for treating acne and other blemishes. It soothes irritation and inflammation.
In addition to the above, it also has: Rosemary Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil, Lavender Oil, and Vitamin E. All of these are great for fortifying and healing your skin.
Finally, it also has Citric Acid, which at first I thought was just for a nice citrus aroma. However, it is there because Citric Acid works to remove old skin oils and dead skin to prevent ingrown hairs and acne.
All of this to say this Beard Wash is an all-natural soap for killing acne and renewing your skin.
User Experience
For this review, I spent about a week washing with this as a part of my shower routine.
I use a brush for building a lather and then scrubbing to make sure I exfoliate my beard. You can also do this with a washcloth, and I personally highly recommend it.
Using your hands to attempt to lather and scrub your face is just going to create an inferior lather and waste the beard wash.
How is the Texture?
The Texture of this beard wash leaves a great deal to be desired.
Honestly, in its non-lathered state, it might as well just be water. It is so runny and just spills everywhere. Another reason to use a washcloth or brush when you lather with Medicine Man.
Even when it lathers up, it is still very thin. It doesn’t get the suds that you get from more viscous beard washes like Scotch Porter Moisturizing Beard Wash or King C. Gillette Beard & Face Wash. Though it doesn’t need them.
After washing with this beard wash, it left my face feeling clean and refreshed. I didn’t feel any kind of oily residue left behind or feel like my skin was peeling off. It was just a clean feeling all over.
How Easy is it to Use?
On the surface, it is pretty easy. All you do is squirt it on your washcloth, brush, or your hands and start lathering it up.
The problem is that this beard wash has the same consistency as water. If you aren’t careful you are going to be wasting half the amount of beard wash you use just because it runs off. This is especially true if you are using your hands.
More than anything I would recommend a thick washcloth or brush or SOMETHING to absorb and lather the beard wash before putting it on your skin. Otherwise, you are going to just lose everything every time you use it.
Value for Money
As of the time of writing, you can find Medicine Man Beard Wash on Amazon for 22 USD or on the OneDTQ website for 18 USD.
The price difference is mostly accounted for in the way Amazon does delivery fees vs how OneDTQ does. Amazon (if you are a prime customer) charges you slightly more for the product so they can say they are offering Free Delivery. While OneDTQ advertises its actual price and then has a blanket of 4 USD for US Shipping.
More to the point, is this a good deal?
Honestly, it depends on what you are looking for. If you are a guy suffering from severe beard itch that won’t go away even with your beard brush, then this could be your inexpensive savior. If you are just looking for an inexpensive beard wash, I would look for something else.
However, it is worth noting that you will be supporting a small business with each purchase. Would you rather your money go to a small business or a big corporation?
Final Thoughts – Who is Medicine Man Beard Wash really for?
Overall, Medicine Man Beard Wash is by no means a bad beard wash. It has a strange texture and a scent that you need to get used to as you use it, but it does the job and makes your skin feel great.
The main sticking point is the price, and honestly, it isn’t too terrible for a small business.
Who is it for? If you are a guy who has issues with beard itch and no other beard wash works, then this is overwhelmingly a product fit for you. This beard wash plus a nice boar hair brush is going to solve that itch problem for you within a week.
If you are looking for something that is more stylish or is for more of a broad audience, I would look elsewhere.
