SheaMoisture Beard Wash – The Best Treatment for your Dry Beard
SheaMoisture Beard Wash is a godsend for any man experiencing issues with coarse, unmanageable beard hair and dry, flaky skin.
It lathers quickly in either the hands or a washcloth, making it easy to work into a morning or evening routine. It works best when paired with the SheaMoisture Beard Conditioning Oil.
It’s a beard wash that comes with natural ingredients and a lather that can only be described as luxurious.
I have spent two weeks incorporating this into my morning face-washing routine, and I must say that it has exceeded my expectations.
I had to conduct thorough research to find any real downsides for this product, and that is a very good thing for me. I would rather sing a beard product’s praises than rip it apart.
Description and Features

SheaMoisture comes to us in a user-friendly pop cap squeeze tube, perfect for use at the sink or in the shower. I found the calming and soothing green color helps it to stand out against the sea of white and blue that you normally see with other products, making it easy to find.
The beard wash itself comes out as a gel, rather than the typical “goop” that many shampoos and washes often feature. This makes it very easy to determine exactly how much you need with every squeeze so that you won’t overuse it.

Ingredients
One aspect that stands out to me is that it is not tested on animals at all. I consider myself a socially conscious consumer.

There are two very big ingredients that the wash highlights, which are great for beard products.
One is in the name of the product: Shea Butter. Some say it hydrates the hair, but it is more about maintaining the moisture that is already in the hair. When used as a part of haircare, Shea Butter keeps moisture in to help hair retain a clean and smooth look.
When used on the skin, it can hydrate the skin. Healthy skin leads to healthy hair.
The second ingredient is Maracuja Oil, which comes from passion fruit. This oil is very light and is great for relaxing hair. It specifically works to tame and relax curly and coarse hair, allowing for fuller-looking beards and lending a great deal of shine to the hair.
SheaMoisture Beard Wash is also free of parabens, sulfates, and mineral oils. These products are often used in cosmetics, but can dry out and irritate the skin. This causes everything from dry and flaky beard-druff to even hair loss. Glad we don’t have any of those.
Full Ingredients List — Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Glycerin (Vegetable), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Passiflora Edulis Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa (Argan) Kernel Oil, Melaleuca Alternifolia (Tea Tree) Leaf Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Panthenol, Allantoin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Sodium Phytate, Caprylyl Glycol, Caprylhydroxamic Acid, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Sodium Benzoate, Fragrance (Essential Oil Blend).
Scent
The aroma is very soft and subtle.
It starts with a hint of sweet vanilla that quickly fades to a gentle woody bass note.
The scent doesn’t stick around, and it fades quickly. While this would be a problem in a perfume or cologne, a good beard wash does not overstay its welcome. You need it to fade so it doesn’t clash with any other products you are using.
User Experience
For this review, I replaced my normal beard wash with SheaMoisture for two weeks.
I used this product every day, lathering it up using a washcloth in the shower. I experimented using it as just a solo beard wash and as a full face wash to see if I noticed any difference.
There is a noticeable light and soft feeling in my beard compared to using regular soap and water. My skin feels cleaner and healthier, and my beard hair feels much fluffier and softer.
How is the Texture?
When lathering, I found I had better lather with a washcloth rather than just my hands. However, it will build a rich lather either way. The washcloth is just more efficient because it allows for exfoliating the beard at the same time.
The lather itself is creamy and soft, adding a buttery smooth feeling to my skin and a fluffy clean feeling to my beard.
It doesn’t look like much when you apply it, but the results speak for themselves.
How Easy is it to use?
You don’t need much to build a rich lather with this beard wash. Just about a dime-sized squirt into your hands and you can build a nice thick lather.

As I noted, it tends to work better using a washcloth or brush because that can exfoliate your skin. However, don’t let that stop you if you just want to use your hands.
It rinses very clean, so you don’t need to scrub hard to get rid of the oily feeling most beard washes leave on your face.
Just remember this is for more coarse and heavy beards, so if your facial hair is thin and scraggly, you won’t get much out of it.
Value for Money
This is where we hit the one issue that I have with SheaMoisture Beard Wash, and even then, it isn’t a huge issue.
The bottle is 6 oz for around $10 US.
For those following the scale from before, this makes it about the same cost as 1 pizza.
That doesn’t feel like much. Though you don’t need much to come up with a rich lather that will cover your face, you are going to run out quickly. I can see a need to replace this bottle twice a month if you use it daily.
That can add up if your budget is very tight.
However, if you are taking your skin care and beard care seriously, it won’t break the bank.
Final Thoughts – (Verdict – Who’s it For?)
Overall, I give SheaMoisture an enthusiastic endorsement. My few Cons are in no way deal breakers, and you can do so much worse than this beard wash.
Believe me, I have reviewed much worse on this website.
As to who this beard wash is for, I would say that any guy struggling with coarse beard hair and itchy, dry skin should give SheaMoisture Beard Wash a try. Grab a bottle and use it for a week. You will feel the difference in the way your beard brushes and feels.
The SheaMoisture Beard Conditioning Oil paired very well with this wash.
