Suavecito Beard Wash Review – The Stylist’s Wash
Suavecito is a brand that has a presence in the world of beard styling. They cultivate a “devil-may-care” attitude that flirts with the aesthetics of motorcycle clubs and stylish men’s health and hygiene.
In fact, their product lines cover men’s hair products as well as beards. They are gunning to be your one-stop shop for all of your needs to look smooth and cool.
We’ve taken a look at the illustriously named Suavecito before when we reviewed Suavecito Premium Blends Beard Oil. They showed off some great craftsmanship there with their oil which is definitely for the stylist.
Today though we are going to take a close look at their beard wash and see if it stacks up against the many others we’ve reviewed on this website.
Description and Features
To start off, the Suavecito bottle is hefty. They made sure to fill this thing to the top. This is great because it means I won’t run out any time soon.
In this day and age, I am always looking for the best way to save money, and if I can make beard products last then all the better.
8 ounces means it will probably last me a good month if I ration and use it correctly (use every other day).
The pop top is also a huge plus because it means I can open the bottle and squeeze it onto my body brush with only one hand. So much easier than having to tangle with a screw top. Though I wouldn’t complain if they decided to switch to a pump instead.
However, as some other reviewers have noted, the pop top does have a tendency to open itself up when you are traveling and the bottle could leak everywhere. This could also happen in shipping as well, so cross your fingers if you decide to order from Amazon.
While some might like the aroma, I would rather my luggage not smell like menthol.
Speaking of the Scent…
Scent
Suavecito Beard Wash has one overriding scent and that scent is menthol.
It should be noted that when it comes to the actual scent, as with many things, this is my subjective taste. You might not find the mint aroma that unappealing.
However, in my opinion, the menthol seriously punches you in the face. I should be brushing my teeth with this beard wash.
Throughout my time with this beard wash, I varied the amount I used to see if I could dial in the correct amount for a good lather (see below), and each time it left me with the inability to smell anything other than menthol for about half an hour afterward.
If you are sensitive to mint or menthol at all, stay far away from this beard wash.
Ingredients
Suavecito Beard Wash doesn’t have the most appealing ingredients list of all the beard washes I have reviewed.
The list is overloaded with sulfates typically designed to improve shelf-life and allow for it to actively cleanse your skin. However, some of the ingredients (Glycol Stearate for example) are known to irritate those with sensitive skin.
DMDM hydantoin is also a form of formaldehyde and can dehydrate and irritate skin with too much repeated use.
It isn’t all bad. It does have some helpful ingredients like Tea Tree Oil that locks moisture into your hair and helps to clear away dead skin cells. It also contains peppermint oil (as though there wasn’t enough mint already) which stimulates hair growth and strengthens the hair. Finally, it also contains citric acid, which also breaks down dead skin cells and cleanses old skin oils.
All of these last ingredients are great for avoiding ingrown hairs, which my beard gets way too often.
User Experience
For this Beard wash, I used it every day for a week to get the feel of it and see how it improved my beard.
Overall it does the job of washing out my beard and letting my face feel fresh and clean, but I have a few nitpicks about texture and the lather.
How is the Texture?
Suavecito beard wash has a lotion-like texture. It is very thick and opaque and does not flow easily. You need to squeeze the bottle to get it out.
Even more illusions to it making me feel like it was toothpaste instead of a beard wash.
I did notice that it has a tendency to cling to my skin and takes some effort to rinse off fully. This oily residue is what allows it to protect the beard after using it, but the strong and cloying scent just made me want to get all of this off me as quickly as I could.
On the positive side, the oil left behind also means you can style your beard better. If you are looking for a good wash to help you style your mustache and beard, then this one is a good starting point.
How Easy is it to Use?
Lathering this beard wash was a chore. Unlike some other beard washes, we’ve used and reviewed here on Shaving Advisor (Scotch Porter Moisturizing Beard Wash & King C. Gillette Beard & Face Wash), you just don’t get the lather you should want.
I have graduated from using a washcloth to using a nice brush to build a lather in the shower when washing my face, and I have found it amazingly useful to build a lather for beard washes.
However, it didn’t help at all for Suavecito. The lather came out thin and it felt like I had to spread it out more than I would have with another beard wash.
Value for Money
As of the time of writing this review, Suavecito Beard Wash is currently on sale for 13.99 USD on Suavecito’s website or 12.55 USD on Amazon.
For 8 ounces of product, that is a pretty good deal. Many beard washes start at around 14 or 15 USD and sell less product.
It isn’t as good a deal as you would get for something like King C Gillette, but the specialized nature of this Suavecito Beard Wash affords a few extra dollars.
Final Thoughts – Who is Suavecito Beard Wash really for?
Overall, I recommend Suavecito Beard Wash if you want to get into beard styling or if you want to take steps to add volume and body to a thin beard. It has the ingredients to solve issues like acne or ingrown hairs. It also provides a base or starting point for you to build a beard style using another product like beard oil, balm, or wax.
And with the low price, you could certainly afford to give it a shot.
However, if you have sensitive skin or are allergic to menthol, sulfates, or formaldehyde, I would stay VERY far away from this beard wash. You are better off using a more natural product.
