Braun Series 9 Pro + Review – Everything To Know
Braun’s flagship shaver product goes one up again from the S9, S9 Pro, and now the Braun Series 9 Pro+.
The S9 Pro+ landed in online shops in 2023, so at the moment, these models are the latest from the S9 range and generations.
This generation begins with the number 95, so we get 95xx (various model numbers).
The upgrade from the S9 to the S9 Pro proved to have a few decent changes, including a change in the shaving elements (and I found it more powerful and efficient). The Series 9 Pro + has fewer changes than the S9 Pro models (94xx model numbers), and the biggest change I see is the improvement of the detailed trimmer.
Despite lacking any major changes or improvements, I bought myself a S9 Pro+ (model 9527s). I used it for 6 weeks so I could review it properly for you guys here.
Model Numbers
As usual, model numbers vary based on what accessories the shaver comes with, its color, and the country in which it is sold.
When you see the model number begin with 95xx, you know it is the generation I am reviewing here.
An S on 95xxS means it comes without the Cleancare Center (cleaning station).
All 95 models have the same shaver build and give the same performance.

You might be able to find some additional information in the YouTube video review I created for the shaver, and/or the visuals might help.
Description & Features
As mentioned, I got myself the Braun Series 9 Pro+ 9527s, which came with the new PowerCase and charging stand.
I got the PowerCase and a CleanCare Center with the Braun Series 9 Pro 9477cc (previously used and reviewed), so I did not need the same accessories. Still, as the price of the 9527s with the PowerCase was fair, I got that one (spare PowerCase).
Shaving Elements
Let’s break down the key components that handle the cutting during shaving.
Other Braun shaver models typically have fewer of these elements, with most featuring just three. The older Series 9 and Braun Series 9 Pro, however, have 4+1 shaving elements—four for cutting and one for a skin guard.
A visual of these will be better–
- Foils (1 and 5) – These are the foil shaving elements named OptiFoil™ by Braun. Like all foil guards, they help protect your skin from the cutters.
- Skin Guard – This element doesn’t actually cut. Its role is to protect the skin, similar to the safety bar on traditional safety razors.
- Direct & Cut Trimmer – This trimmer is designed to tackle hair growing in different directions for a smoother shave.
- ProLift Trimmer – Coated with titanium, this element gently targets and cuts through tougher, more stubborn hairs.
It’s a great set of elements that I have found to provide comfort, and it has the cutters to pick up my stray and difficult-to-cut hairs (my sideburns and jaw area, in particular, need this).
The elements all move independently, which is useful when shaving along the various contours and the variation of hair lengths and angle that are growing.
Auto-Sense and Sonic Technology
Auto-Sense means the shaver automatically detects the thickness of your beard and adjusts the power accordingly.
Sonic technology works alongside this by providing 10,000 micro-vibrations per minute while delivering 40,000 cutting actions per minute.
It may sound like a lot of technical jargon, but what really matters is the balance between power, cutting performance, and comfort.
Personally, I’ve never noticed a significant change in beard density when using an electric shaver, so I suspect any adjustments are subtle.
40’000 Cutting Actions Per Minute
This is an important factor to consider when choosing an electric razor, especially with higher-end models like the S9 Pro+.
Once a shaver reaches 20’000 cutting actions per minute or more, it’s generally powerful enough for any user.
40’000 is more than enough.
40° Flexible Head & Precision Switch
The flexible head is a really useful feature. It allows the shaver to move smoothly across the curves of your face, giving us better control while shaving.
Now, about the precision switch. It allows the user to lock the head into one of four settings or unlock it to let the head move back and forth during shaving.
The head doesn’t actually lock completely; the switch lets it click into four different settings. It would be nice to have the option to completely lock the head, but after testing the Pro and Pro+, I found that it stays in place just fine.
The longer strokes with it locked work well for me, and then unlocked works great when shaving along the jaw and chin going upwards as it moves along the contours very well.
I can’t see how this could be improved apart from having a complete locking feature; otherwise, it’s excellent.
Build Quality and Ergonomics
The Braun Series 9 Pro is made from a mix of metal, plastic, and a rubberized back that gives a solid, comfortable grip. It feels sturdy in my hand, and Braun claims the razor should last up to 7 years, which seems very realistic.
It’s easy to hold, and overall, it feels like a well-built shaver like all the S9 shavers I have used.
The thumb area, which was previously a switch on the S9 93xx models, also provides grip with a lined design. This is only plastic and could be improved if rubberized (maybe).
Precision Trimmer
So, this trimmer that slides forward from the back of the shaver has seen an upgrade and is now called a Pro Trimmer. It now has straight blades rather than curved.
I dont grow long sideburns because I shave my head very short or bald most of the time, so I dont have much of a sideburn to trim. However, I have used it, and it’s useful and works, and will be useful for other guys with more head hair than me.
I never rate these detail trimmers highly, but this one is better than most.
LED Indicators & Travel Lock
The S9 Pro+ comes with enough LED’s and everything we need. The 5 bars count down how much charge we have left, and the last 9 minutes are numerical (this is great and useful).
We also have a cleaning reminder, a padlock that shows if we try to use the shaver while it is on a charge, a foil replacement reminder, and the padlock appears when we hold the button for a few seconds (it activates the travel lock, and to deactivate–hold the button again for a few seconds).
Cutting Power
With 40,000 cutting actions per minute, the motor is powerful—hands down the strongest of all Braun shavers I’ve used.
The head and cutting elements work exceptionally well. I’ve noticed this especially when I go over areas that need a little touch-up, as it clears up any patches without a problem and is quicker than most.
Ease of Use
I haven’t found anything difficult about the S9 Pro+, whether it’s charging, cleaning, or using.
I do wish the head and switch could completely lock the head’s movement. Still, the clickable design makes it easy for anyone to adjust the position without fuss.
Charging and Battery
The shaver gives us 60 minutes of runtime on a full charge, which is plenty. It takes about an hour to charge fully through the mains, or you can give it a quick 5-minute boost if you’re in a rush.
In my experience, the Braun shavers I’ve owned, both past and present, have always had great battery life. Honestly, I’ve upgraded to a new razor before any of the batteries ever stopped holding a charge.
One thing to note: you can’t use the shaver while it’s charging. A red padlock symbol shows up on the LED screen if you try.
If you get the version with the PowerCase, you’ll have an extra 50% charge while traveling (backup plan when no cord or suitable plug socket is available).
The last 9 minutes of charge left count down numerically on the LED screen. This is super useful in knowing how much power I have left, and it is very accurate, too!
Cleaning and Maintenance
The S9 Pro+ is super easy to clean, whether you do it manually or use the SmartCare Center (the cleaning and charging station).
When I first started using shavers with cleaning systems, I thought it was just a gimmick, but now I’m convinced. After a quick rinse and blow-out of the cassette and head, I just drop it into the cleaning station and go about my day.
That said, the cleaning station isn’t a must. The shaver cleans up easily by hand. I just add a little antibacterial soap inside the head, run water through it with the shaver on, and then it’s perfectly clean.
The cleaning fluid for the cleaning station really does a good job of cleaning the blades, and the unit dries them afterward, leaving the head fresh and clean. The CleanCare Center also charges the shaver at the same time.
The cleaning system also helps lubricate the blades, which is great.
The dryer works well, but I’ve noticed a few drops of water left inside after the cycle finishes.
One downside to the cleaning station is the cost of the replacement cleaning fluid cartridges. They’re around USD 5 (or GBP 4, EUR 4) each, though they’re cheaper if you buy in bulk. The cartridges last about three months, depending on how often you use the shaver.
You can find alternatives to the Braun refills to save some money, although the company doesn’t recommend it.
I bought the cleaning station (CleanCare Center) with the last S9 Pro, but I chose not to get one with the S9 Pro+. The S9 Pro+ has a slightly different look, but all the functions are the same.
Don’t forget to lubricate the blades regularly. This keeps them working smoothly, reduces wear, and helps protect them. How often you need to do this depends on whether you use soap with the shaver and if you rely on the cleaning system, which lubricates the blades automatically.
Also, be sure to oil the trimmer blades regularly.
Replacement Cassettes (94M): Part of the upkeep involves replacing the cassette foils, which should be done about every 18 months. Braun’s recommendation can vary depending on how often you use the shaver and factors like your beard growth, but 18 months is a good rule of thumb.
Accessories
The S9 pro+ has a lot going on with accessories and, in my experience, above all other shavers. Choosing the right model can prove to be quite tricky. The trickiness is that some of these accessories are extremely useful, but the cost of the models can differ somewhat (we gotta think about the money, haven’t we).
I previously bought the S9 Pro, which came with the two main higher-priced accessories (CleanCare Center and PowerCase) for reviewing purposes and testing. Both the cleaning station and the power bank type case were extremely useful, but not necessary.
The accessories various models come with include:
- 6-in-1 SmartCare Center: An automated system that cleans, lubricates, dries, and charges your shaver at the touch of a button, ensuring optimal performance and hygiene.
- PowerCase: A portable charging case that provides up to 50% more battery life, ideal for extended use and travel (See Review for Braun PowerCase).
- ProComfort Head Attachment: A pre-shave attachment that lifts and massages beard hair, enhancing comfort and preparing for a closer shave.
- Charging Stand: A compact stand that charges and holds the shaver, saving counter space while keeping the device ready for use.
- Travel Case (Fabric): A lightweight, durable fabric case that protects the shaver during travel, ensuring portability and convenience.
- Cleaning Brush: A small manual brush for removing hair and debris from the shaver’s head, aiding in regular maintenance.
I have found cleaning stations very useful (as mentioned) but not necessary. I have got plenty of use out of my previous PowerCase bought with the S9 Pro, which is why I was happy to have one included with the S9 Pro+.
Buyers in the UK and EU are fortunate to have many options, unlike in the USA. Those in the USA have more options with the S9 Pro at the moment, but this may change.
The pre-shave ProComfort attachment boosted up the cost of the model available a bit too much for my liking (for now). I am sure it could be useful, but I am not willing to spend much extra cash on a face massager.
The small charging stand is very useful, especially if you don’t have the CleanCare Center or PowerCase. The shaver sits in it nicely and charges the shaver up, but it is a bit plasticky, and I feel Braun could have made it more solid with metal—more like the stand that comes with the Gillette Exfoliating Razor.
The shaver, alone with just a fabric travel case, is still a great option and about all we need, really. The main thing is having a powerful and efficient shaver, like the S9 Pro+.
Shaving Experiences
It was great to revisit the Series 9 after the last review on the S9 Pro back in 2022 and a revisit in early 2023, and now onto the S9 Pro+. I have a lot of shavers and razors to use, test, and review, so I can’t stay with one for too long, although I do revisit them.
I knew the S9 Pro outperformed the previous S9 which I discuss here — Braun Series 9 vs 9 PRO.
I was not expecting anything with the S9 Pro+ (95xx model). However, I guessed it could not be any better than the previous 94xx model.
Braun does state this shaver can shave up to 7 days of beard. I’m not sure why anyone would shave a 7-day beard when a trimmer is best used for longer growth unless it’s a young guy with non-coarse growth.
The 7-day thing is somewhat gimmicky; however, I did shave with four days, and it was still pretty mean. Although clearing up tricky hairs took longer, I had more tricky hairs because of the longer growth.
My advice is to use a dedicated trimmer if the growth is over three days unless you are a young man with very soft growth.
On three days and two days of growth, the shaver was mean and shaved super close (for an electric shaver, that is). The shaving elements were as comfortable as they could be when providing that type of cutting power (that’s hard to achieve).
When I found I had difficult hairs left over on sideburns around the jaw area, I was a little disappointed, but after a few strokes, I did clear them up. Part of the issue with me, as I have been testing this, is the leftovers are trickier because of having oily skin.
I am testing out ways to reduce tricky leftover hairs like the flat-laying ones. I am having some success with exfoliating first and using pre-shaves like Speick Pre Electric Shave Lotion. I will report back on this once I have more to share!
Daily shaving is not my thing, as it can cause irritation. However, I did it for three consecutive days, and the shaver was very good and very quick because there was not much stubble to conquer. For you guys that have daily, you should be more than happy with the S9 Pro+ as it is still comfortable despite being aggressive in its cutting nature (not sure you need this level of aggressiveness, though, if you always shave daily).
I did a spot of wet shaving with shaving cream, and that was very good, although I prefer to use electrics dry shaving. Anyway, wet shaving was still very comfortable!
It’s fairly loud, as you’d expect, and definitely not as quiet as a rotary shaver. That said, it’s not as loud as something like the Andis Profoil, which is more like the lawnmower of shavers.
With 40,000 actions per minute, some noise from a foil razor is to be expected.
I have also head shaved with the S9 Pro+, but all about that is in the next article for the gents that head shave.

Value for Money
While the 9 Pro+ is definitely on the pricier side, priced at around $249+ (£230+, €230+), it’s a fantastic shaver. For those upgrading from a Series 7, 8, or 9, that extra investment is well worth it if you’re looking for the best foil shaver available (a price caveat on this in the final thoughts section).
In the USA, there are still limited options, and the S9 Pro, not Plus availability, is better. In the UK and EU, more options are available. I will cover this more below in the final thoughts!
The 94M replacement cassettes cost around $59.99 (£40, €41). While they’re a bit expensive, they can last up to 18 months.
Final Thoughts – Verdict (Worth Buying?)
If you have read this far, then you obviously have a strong interest in the Braun Series 9 Pro+.
As the actual performance of the S9 Pro+ (95xx model) is the same as the S9 Pro (94xx model), I recommend buying the one that has the accessories best suited for you and at the right price.
It is nice to have the latest edition/generation, and I am the type of buyer who likes the latest. Still, the previous 94xx models and parts will be available for some time.
The bottom line with the shaver is that it is unbeatable in performance with its efficiency and closeness while still providing a comfortable experience.
It’s tough enjoying pricey grooming products (on my credit card, I mean)!
