Edwin Jagger Shaving Bowl (Porcelain Handle) Review – Worth Buying or Not?

Edwin Jagger Porcelain Black Shaving Bowl with Handle on presentation box

When it comes to using a shaving bowl for lathering up shaving cream or soap (in a way), any type of bowl or mug will do the job. However, bowls made for wet shaving have design features that help make the job much easier and better.

The Edwin Jagger Porcelain Shaving bowl (with a handle) is one of those bowls or mugs that aims to do that and make lathering easier and better.

Edwin Jagger sells several different bowls, including stainless steel (no handle), ivory and black colored no-handle porcelain, and both ivory and black bowls with handles. The one I review here is the porcelain model with a handle (we’ve got a black one).

The Brand: Edwin Jagger is based in the UK (Sheffield, England), and is a family-owned business that was established in 1988. Most online stores that sell shaving supplies are likely to have some Edwin Jagger products in stock, not only in the UK, but in Europe, the US, and other countries. You can also find their products for sale in department stores. It’s a trusted brand and similar to a brand like Merkur or Muhle.

Description and Features

Bowl opening diameter: 100mm

Base internal diameter: 65mm

Made with black or ivory-colored porcelain

Branded with Edwin Jagger logo

Handle

When looking at the Edwin Jagger bowl, it looks like a larger teacup with a small bottom area that opens up at the top (widens). This design is ideal for shaving bowls as the lather mixes in the bottom of the bowl and works its way up once it starts foaming.

The bottom of the bowl has quite large notches. These are perfect for enabling a shaving brush to mix up the lather more easily against the bowl’s surface.

The other main feature is the handle. This handle is held in a kind of backward way, with the forefingers griping the front of the cup and the thumb at the back.

Using The Edwin Jagger Shaving Bowl – It’s Time To Lather and Shave

On the first appearance, this bowl looks great, and with the handle (kind of big knob) placed on the bottom section, it’s a perfect fit for my hand. I can see that the bowl would also accommodate bigger and smaller hands than mine unless they are super large.

Having the notches at the bottom of the shaving bowl makes all the difference and helps create lather quicker. This is the case with this Jagger bowl.

Lathering up in this bowl was perfect. If it were the only bowl I could ever use for shaving, I would be more than happy with it.

In terms of size, this also gets a perfect rating from me. Some bowls can be slightly small, and then others a bit too big, but this bowl does seem to nail it for my hands and preferences.

There is enough depth and space within this bowl to create plenty of lather without it overflowing at the edges. It is just about right, not too deep or wide.

I have used bowls with and without handles, and they do differ. Without a handle, you can hold the bowl at a stronger angle point, which gives a user the chance to whirl their brush around with more pressure. This is not quite the same with a handle on a handled bowl, and it is not really required (to give lathering so much extra pressure, that is).

Value for Money

This Edwin Jagger shaving bowl is not the cheapest bowl to buy and costs around $49 USD. It’s not quite as pricey in Europe as it is made in the UK.

While it is pricey, if a man wants a good-quality bowl that lathers perfectly and also looks attractive, then the price tag is worth it.

I guess some of the higher price aspects are related to the brand Edwin Jagger. This applies to many products, doesn’t it? Some of us like certain brands.

Any Common Consumer Issues, Complaints, or Positive Reports?

There aren’t any real or consistent complaints about this Edwin Jagger shaving bowl, apart from what I have mentioned – a bit pricey. Even though consumers mention it is pricey, they state it is worth it.

Final Thoughts and Who Is The Edwin Jagger Porcelain Shaving Bowl Best Suited For

As mentioned above, the EJ bowl cannot be faulted in any way. It lathers up perfectly while being comfortable and stable to hold. The only gripe for some guys will be the cost.

If you prefer a deeper mug-type shaving bowl, this one is worth checking out, especially if the handle and bottom notches improve lathering appeal to you. If you like a wider bowl with less depth, then obviously, this one is not for you.

This is just a quick mention before I log off. Although this bowl is pretty strong and has thick porcelain, porcelain can possibly break. With metal or wooden bowls, this can never happen, which is worth noting.

See you at the next lather up and shave down!
