Scotch Porter Beard Oil Review – Warmth and Relaxation for your Beard
Long-term readers of Shaving Advisor will be aware that I have previously reviewed Scotch Porter bearded products on our website.
Each time I have had the opportunity to review Scotch Porter, I am always impressed by the outcome and give them high scores.
This left me expecting a great deal from their beard oil, and at the risk of showing my hand too early, I was not disappointed.
Let’s see how it compares to the other beard oils I have used and reviewed.
Description and Features
Much like other Scotch Porter products, this Beard Oil is packaged in a simple, unassuming blue bottle with a straightforward label. It is opaque, so you can’t see how much you have left.
It also displays the ingredients in a clear and easy-to-read format.
I am a big fan of the white cap that keeps the pump from accidentally squirting out all over your belongings when traveling. It is a pop top, not a screw, though. I have accidentally attempted to screw the top off multiple times.
Scent
The fragrance of this beard oil is very soft and warming.
It starts with a sweet, almost Vanilla or honey-like aroma, but it is not cloyingly sweet. It slowly moves into a deep musky aroma like moss or old-growth forest.
It makes me think of something gentle and warm, which is good because the scent is going to last for hours.
I very much like the aroma, but it can get old after six hours.
Ingredients
This beard oil is packed with high-quality ingredients.
The biggest names on that list are Jojoba Oil and Avocado Seed Oil.
Jojoba, as we have noted in the past, is ideal for adding and maintaining moisture in your skin and hair. It also heals damaged skin and hair by being an anti-inflammatory. I have issues with getting dry and irritated skin under my beard, and Jojoba is perfect for that.
In the case of avocado seed oil, it can help repair the hair follicle and reduce stress in your hair. This can smooth it out and make it easier to trim or style as you like.
Official Ingredients List: Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Canola Oil, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Silica, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Fragrance (Parfum), Isohexadecane, Ethylene/Propylene/Styrene Copolymer, Butylene/Ethylene/Styrene Copolymer, Tocopheryl Acetate
User Experience
I have spent a few weeks using the oil every other day on a clean beard. You can use either beard wash or just soap and water. Either works well for this.
It is a very simple process of applying two pumps to the fingers and carefully massaging it into the hair follicles of my beard.
When it comes to judging beard oils, I have two oils that are my standards of comparison: Every Man Jack Beard Oil and Cremo Palo Santo Beard Oil. These two set the level I am looking for in both how they feel on the skin and how my beard feels after using them.
Unfortunately, Scotch Porter doesn’t measure quite as well against those.
How is the Texture?
The texture is incredibly smooth and easy to work with. It is very light and gentle, going easily on the skin.
Luckily, the fact that it feels good on the skin matches the fact that you’ll be feeling this texture for a while. The oil does not dry out quickly. It lasts for a while before it finally fades away.
If I had to compare it to other beard oils I have used, I would say it is similar to the Grave Before Shave Beard Oil I previously used and reviewed. Not bad, but it leaves an oily residue that lingers longer than it should.
This is great for protecting the skin, but if you have strong feelings about feeling oily throughout the day, you might want to skip this one.
Ease of Use
Like all beard oils, this product is applied after washing your beard, whether in the shower or at the sink.
It is very easy to apply and work into your skin and beard. However, you will need more than you think.
The instructions on the package suggest one to two pumps, but in reality, you will need three. Your skin and hair will absorb this oil, and you’ll need more.
It could be that, or I just have a very large face. Or it could be both; neither is mutually exclusive, really.
Value for Money
As of the time of writing, it is currently on Amazon for $15 USD.
The big question is whether it is worth the price for your beard.
Our scale at home is pizza, and this beard oil comes out to around 1.5 pizzas.
Is that a good trade-off for a great beard? Absolutely. This is comparable to the value of most beard oils, which is great for those of us who are concerned about the bottom line in our budgets.
Final Thoughts – (Verdict – Who’s it For?)
Overall, I would highly recommend Scotch Porter Beard Oil. It is a nice and light oil that is perfect for those with a stressed-out or scraggly build. It will help to relax the hair and improve your skin. It will leave your hair almost glowing.
It’s a good option for those looking for a good beard oil to help their beard shine, but without wanting to spend too much money on it.
