Braun 5 in 1 SmartCare Center – Everything To Know
If you’re considering purchasing the Braun Series 8 or the Braun Series 9 Pro and wondering whether to choose a model that includes the Braun SmartCare Center, this article is for you.
Additionally, if you already own a Braun Series 8 or 9 Pro and are contemplating purchasing the 5 in 1 SmartCare Center as an accessory, keep reading.
You might also find this article helpful as well if you already own this cleaning station and need to check an aspect of using it that I should be able to help with here.
I have been using and reviewing cleaning stations for various shavers over the years. This model 5430 is the cleaning station (I prefer that name for them) that I purchased and reviewed for the Braun Series 8 8567cc – (All 85xx models are the same shaver).
This article will walk you through:
- Compatibility
- Key features and functionality
- How to set up and use the SmartCare Center
- Pros and cons of integrating it into your shaver cleaning routine
- Helping you decide if it is worth purchasing for your current S8 or S9 or have it included as an accessory in a S8 or S9 purchase
Compatible Shavers
All models of Series 8, including 83xx (2019 models), 84xx, and 85xx, can be used with the center.
The compatible S9 models include the 93xx (2019 models) and 94xx (S9 Pro), and Braun states it is not compatible with the 95xx (Pro+), which is not true. I have used the Braun Series 9 Pro + with this cleaning station.
I guess Braun is stating the 95xx is not compatible because it can be purchased with the latest 6 in 1 SmartCare Center. However, that does not mean it is not compatible.
5 in 1 vs 6 in 1 – Comparison
While I have now mentioned the 6 in 1, it is worth sharing what the differences are. The short answer is not a lot!
The 6-in-1 just has very minor cosmetic changes, like a silver strip, and the LEDs are clearer to see when they are not in use.
The 6 in 1 is, in fact, the same as the 5 in 1 in terms of functions (i.e., the 6 in 1 does not have an additional function). What Braun has done is change the sales text on the page (compare pictures below), but it still only does the same as the 5 in 1 center.
Key Functions
The five functions the Braun SmartCare Center provides include:
- Automatic Cleaning: It keeps our shaver in optimal condition by removing hair and skin particles through its three programs. The three automatic programs are short (economical), normal, and intensive*.
- Lubrication: The fluid lubricates the foils and cutters, which maintains them without having to manually put oil on the foils and cutters.
- Drying Function: Ensures the shaver is ready for use with a hygienic and dry shaving cassette.
- Charging Dock: Fully charges our shaver when it’s left in the dock. It takes the same charging time as when it is attached with a plug (i.e., up to 60 mins).
- Hygiene Indicator: Automatically selects the appropriate cleaning intensity based on the shaver’s cleanliness level.
*These three cleaning programs are indicated on the front of the center, and it also has an additional indicator for when the cleaning fluid is low (it also lights up when no cartridge is inside).
Cleaning Cartridges
The cleaning cartridges contain an alcohol solution, and this solution cleans the shaver and gives it a good hygienic rinse.
As we know, alcohol is used in some anti-bacterial hand gels to kill viruses and bacteria, so it is likely a good thing for shaving elements and us. The fluid must also contain lubricants that help maintain the cutters, as I have felt the oiliness of the liquid between my fingers.
The cleaning fluid provides a pleasant citrus scent (lemon), which I like. It is a very mild scent, though!
When the cartridges are left in the SmartCare Center, the solution inside will naturally evaporate over time (Braun states about 8 weeks) because of the alcohol content.
These cartridges are to be replaced every 8 weeks (approx.) when using a shaver frequently in the center, and that can be costly or at least an extra expense to consider.
We can also take the cartridge out of the center after every cleaning session and put the cap back on to seal it. This is useful if you plan on not using the cleaning station after every shave (i.e., manual clean between shaves); otherwise, if you use the center after every shave, I can see that being annoying (and risk spilling fluid each time).
I am always moving between shavers because I use, test, and review many, so it works out fine for me to remove the cartridge when I am done with that shaver (until I need the shaver again).
Setting Up and Using the SmartCare Center
Setting up the SmartCare Center is straightforward. Here’s a step-by-step process:
Assembling the Station
I would connect the SmartCare Center to a power source before putting the cleaning cartridge inside, as the fluid from the cleaning cartridge can overflow, and we can waste it (it’s best to have the center sitting stable).
The power cord is a little awkward when fitting it in the power socket, which does not help if a cleaning cartridge is already placed inside (in terms of not spilling any).
Inserting the Cleaning Cartridge
The big visible button on the back of the center needs to be pressed first, which will make the casing of the center pop up.
With the casing raised, slide the cleaning fluid cartridge inside (it is best to do this with the center standing upright). We have to pop the cap off first, being cautious not to spill any, and then slide it inside in the direction of the small arrow (see photo below) with the two top openings of the cartridge closer to ourselves.
Docking The Shaver
Before placing the shaver inside the docking section, it is best to release the locking on the S8 or S9 head via the switch so the head section can move freely. It’s as simple as placing it inside, then, so those two metal ball-type things on the back of the shaver match with the two metal points inside at the back section of the SmartCare Center.
When you dock it, and if it is plugged in, it will begin to charge the shaver until you press the button to begin the cleaning cycle.
I always give my shaver a quick blow to get rid of excess debris. I don’t need to brush; blowing with my lungs works fine.
If I were using shaving cream or lubricant, I would make sure this was all cleaned off straight after shaving and before placing it in the center; otherwise, the lubricant left over in the cassettes might affect the cartridge fluid.
Cleaning Cycle and Charge
Press the button to initiate the automatic cleaning process.
Once I switch on the cleaning cycle, the cleaning station chooses one of the three modes or programs. I would like to have the option of choosing which mode, but the center chooses that for us.
I have no idea how the center decides how much cleaning the shaver requires. I have only ever seen mine go on one dot (short – economical) or two (normal), but never three dots (intensive). It could be the center has a kind of electronic memory rather than the shaver telling the center how much debris it has stuck within it (one for me to ask Braun, I guess).
The initial cleaning is over in a couple of minutes, and we get a burst of fluid flushing, then stopping, then flushing again until the cleaning part is done. The fan then kicks in, which takes about 45 minutes to do its thing.
Some guys might find it a pain that the drying takes 45 minutes. Still, it is a set and get on about your business/day type of product and is not to be watched like waiting for clothes to be finished at a laundry.
After the drying (and I have timed all this), the charging kicks in, and then next up is a fully cleaned, lubricated, and charged shaver.
I did have a concern about the shaver not being 100% dry after the cycle. However, after I discovered that the leftover liquid felt quite oily, it made sense that a little left on the elements was fine as it was lubricating these elements.
You can remove the cassette from the shaver and leave it off for a while to let it dry more if you think that is best.
Overall, it is a very easy setup and pretty good as a set-and-go type of thing. I do like the freshness of the foils and elements.
I get my foils and cutters nice and clean. I think blowing out debris first helps, and the cartridge does not get dirty with debris quickly, either.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Convenient Maintenance: Automatic cleaning ensures the shaver remains hygienic and keeps the foils and cutters in tip-top condition without manual effort.
- Extended Shaver Longevity: Regular cleaning and lubrication maintain the performance and lifespan of the foil and cutter system.
- Time-Saving: The system handles multiple tasks simultaneously, making it efficient.
- Enhanced Hygiene: Cleaning with this enhanced method might help prevent skin irritation by keeping the shaving head germ-free.
Cons:
- Cost: The initial purchase price or additional cost when buying an S8 or S9 and the ongoing expense of cleaning cartridges can add up (a cheaper alternative is mentioned above).
- Size: The station requires counter space, which may be inconvenient for some people. It is quite bulky, and a user needs to think about where it will be kept, which will also require a power source to plug it in.
Final Thoughts – Is It Worth Having?
Whether the SmartCare Center is worth it depends on your priorities:
- If you value convenience, hygiene, and the longevity of your shaver, it’s a worthwhile investment.
- If you prefer a minimalist approach or you’re budget-conscious, manual cleaning will suffice.
Is it necessary? Not at all!!
I get along fine with manual cleaning shavers. It’s easy enough as it is without a SmartCare Center!
My thoughts are, like many accessories, they are more of a luxury, creating some kind of convenience, and this is what the center is to me.
After more experience with electric shavers, I do wonder, though, if wet cleaning is a good thing for a shaver, especially in hard water areas where I stay. This led me to think that the center is most likely the best option overall, or at least an alcohol-based cleaning solution rather than plain water.
The Braun SmartCare Center 5-in-1 offers a useful and convenient solution for maintaining our Series 8 or 9 Pro shavers. Its automated cleaning and charging system is ideal for those who want to keep their shaving routine simple, efficient, and hygienic. However, the cost and size considerations may not suit everyone.
If you are buying the S8 or S9 (will be Pro or Pro+ now) shaver, and if the price is not too much higher with the additional accessories, including the CleanCare Center, then it could be worth having the model that comes with the center.
While we are on the topic of accessories for the Braun S8 and S9 Pro, you might want to check out the Braun PowerCase Review. It’s definitely an accessory that’s useful for guys that travel!
Thank you. That has helped. I am proably going to buy the Series 8 and it looks like that cleaning kit station really helps.
You’re welcome.
If it ticks the boxes for you then go for it.
I hope it serves you well!
